Amazon Split Loop

I’m currently in an Amazon split loop as an L5 applicant. One team in Seattle, another in Portland (AWS).

I like Portland because of the low COL, but would like some helpful opinions on potential pros and cons of both locations.

Thanks in advance.

Nah just found it interesting... i love portland they have great food and no sales tax but they have state tax right? You would have more take home money if you work in seattle...

I’d assume CoL would basically even it out. You can deduct state taxes off federal, so some equity there.

I mean...where would you rather live? Say this manager/team disintegrated; what options would you have?

What do you mean deduct state taxes off federal? I thought you always add them together no?

It’s been awhile, so forgive me since we don’t pay them. But as I recall you can deduct the taxes you pay state to lower your adjusted gross income for federal.

It seems like the people that have interviewed me like it there. I’ve heard they have great WLB.

That would be shocking. I have never met anyone on any internal team that has good work life balance, and I work with teams all over the world.

Maybe good work life balance is that you usually get to sleep in your home

No, you can no longer deduct state taxes from federal. A change made by the current administration.

Seattle has drastically higher COL if you want to be anywhere near Amazon centers.

But it has drastically more opportunities and much better food, culture and nightlife.

Higher col compared to portland? I thought having no state tax is actually better income wise right?

Housing any where near Amazon tech jobs has distorted the COL in Seattle. They hire at a very high comp level because their goal is to release 20% of their employees every year.

So they offer comp above market value knowing that they can shed those costs. Jr employees with less experience come in to the area thinking that the comp they have is what they will continue to get, and spend above what they should.

When they’re cut, they realize no one else will pay them what they think they deserve.

Wash, rinse, repeat. The cost of living goes up based on the exuberance of the first two years, and then the Jrs get screwed and have to move to the sticks because the only job they can find pays less than it costs to live in the city.

Hmm i think amazon put 10% on dev list and 6% is let go. Also you can choose to live not in seattle downtown. Rn i am renting on 850 a month.

Amazon offers above market TC but then never gives people raises or bonuses or stock grants. You end up
making a lot less than you could have if you had gone elsewhere.
