Deciding between Amazon Sr PM (my summer internship) and Deloitte Consulting Sr Tech Consultant (my former employer before b-school - 4 years) post-MBA.

Comp is similar between both, only difference being Deloitte will pay for my tuition ($120k)

Amazon is in Seattle, Deloitte is in DC (my hometown - wouldn't need to pay rent). Ideally, would like Amazon in HQ2 in 2 years but don't know the feasibility if entire career spent in Tech Consulting besides my summer internship at Amazon (received return offer).

Long term career goals are to be in tech, either CEO or Director-level of org or my own start-up. Amazon obviously gets me relevant work experience and experience I want, however having a hard time justifying the decision to leave money on the table to move cross-country. Don't know if I can get school paid for and then rejoin in 2 years in similar capacity at HQ2.

I'm a workaholic, really enjoy working hard and progressing through my career, work/life balance is not a priority at this stage of my career. Found the work at Amazon to be gratifying and in my limited exposure meshed well with the culture.

What are your recommendations? Take Amazon now, and give up the money ($200k) or do my 2 years at Deloitte and try for Amazon again? What do you think is the likelihood of getting Amazon again?

I would take Deloitte/DC option. AMZN is not going anywhere. In two years you might be able to snag a role at their new NoVA location.

How likely do you think it would be to land a Sr PM role again with no experience besides my 3 month internship? Do you think AMZN would match my total comp at that time?

I realize that. I would come in as L6. But do you think after 4 years prior consulting experience, MBA Sr PM internship and 2 years more of consulting experience I would come back as a L6 Sr PM but with higher total comp because of the match of my total comp from coming from Deloitte. I know that it’s easier to land a L6 Sr PM role out of MBA but for experienced hires the qualifications for expedience is much greater.

Take the consultant role and make sure you have solid results to show in 2-3 years from now. Then come to Amazon as an industry hire with nearly a double TC. Assuming of course you do really well in the next 2 years with Deloitte. The only benefit of coming to Amazon as an MBA hire is that it’s easier to get in, which doesn’t mean that your employment is guaranteed after your first year or so. The biggest challenge you’ll have is competing with PMs on the same level with 10 YOE in tech or business.

My return offer for AMZN has TC of $200k already. Do you think it’s reasonable to expect double after 2 years in consulting? My TC at Deloitte for those 2 years would be $250k (incl. tuition). My fear is the challenge you suggested. My 6 years consulting experience vs others with 10+ years PM experience. Do you think it’s still likely to expect to be considered full-time w/o the MBA providing me that natural career changing opportunity?

Oh, that’s definitely very different from base MBA offers - next time post your TC in the question :-) If that’s the case, Amazon is the better choice.

I prefer a debt or risk free life, and thus Deloitte’s offer seems much better roi for next 2 years. Though if compared for next 10-15 years then Yes Amazon experience adds alot more value to your resume.

I am of similar mindset re: debt. The risk is taking Deloitte and not being able to re-enter AMZN after my 2 year commitment. Not sure how much weight 6 years consulting experience, a 3 month internship w/return offer, and potentially new jobs at HQ2 holds for getting back in the door. I value the AMZN experience more and do believe it holds more value long term but struggling with the trade off between short term fiscal freedom with long term future prospectus.

There you have your answers, if you can afford deb risk then absolutely go for Amazon. I hope you’re not on F1 or work visa otherwise i would suggest otherwise and take Deloitte’s offer , you never know economic downfall.

Fortunately am a citizen so sponsorship is a non-issue. Funny you bring up economic downfall. That has been another consideration. Deloitte gives guaranteed $$ whereas large portion of AMZN comp is stock. With economic recession on the horizon and regulation speculating around AMZN does it make more sense to do Deloitte and join AMZN in 2 years when these issues are either behind us or have more clarity.

So you are worried that 2yrs later you would still get only $200k from amazon? I don’t know. I don’t see how 2yrs exp at D by then wouldn’t give you more leverage. I agree that the offers on the table now is better with D. Two years in you get 100k more and a $120k tuition forgiveness. That’s huge.

If you can get a Sr PM now why are you worried about two years later with more experience? Plus there’s lots of opportunity in Herndon VA now. AWS tho. Not sure you prefer cloud or retail. Ask the recruiter to match you a position there!

My concern stems from the fact that L6 Sr PM is the de facto role for anyone coming out of MBA. So whether you have 4 years experience or 10 you get same role. However for experienced hire recruiting they are more likely to review your profile holistically which in 2 years time would only consist of 6 years experience. Only difference is I was offered L6 2 years prior but not sure if they would put any stock in that.

It all depends on the experience you get in Deloitte. If it's relevant to Amazon, then no problem in joining as L6.

Realistically it will be a stretch to call it relevant. I would try to position my experience to make it as relevant as possible and have a narrative to make it seem like I continued in that realm. But make no mistake it is not equivalent. It’s still consulting and how they value that experience I’m not sure.

I think it will be difficult to get hired as a PM with 2 more years of consulting experience...they seem to be more generous with new grad MBAs for career switchers. You might have to take a corp dev or strategy role if you continue down Deloitte path is my guess.

Btw - sounds like you already tried negotiating with recruiter (fellow intern here). Was there any wiggle room on signing or stock, or is the offer completely non-negotiable?

Which service line would you be joining in D? If public sector/federal I would say not worth it, you won't learn that much. If not, D for 2 years isn't a bad idea to be debt free. You can easily make a move to Amazon from D, but make sure you join a service line that gets you transferrable skill sets to Amzn

Was on same boat as you last summer (I interned at amzn) and am a gsaper. I have seen folks make the pivot into PM after consulting but it def is harder. Depends on your story and also helps if you can leverage your network for referrals post Deloitte. The projects at Deloitte are product-adjacent so you gotta find roles where you are building software and defining user experience to showcase your product chops. I have prior product exp outside of D. and amzn so that's what I'm banking on

Go Deloitte. Amazon has issues for a tech firm. If it was Deloitte vs Google, I would say pick Google. But Amazon does not pay as well as the other FAAG and you can work at Deloitte, then work for a FAAG firm 3 years from now—making lots of money.
