Amazon TC in smaller cities?

For smaller cities with not high cost of living, what numbers should I target?
SDE1, 4months SDE work in another company, recent grad. Needing gc sponsorship.
Either TC, or base/bonus/stock/PTO days information would be very helpful! I was lowballed in my first job so I don’t want to make the same mistake again but also don’t want to turn the offer down.

If you are in the US, you can negotiate the same TC as Seattle. I know this from experience. I work in a Midwest city and am at the top of the Seattle SDE2 band.

If you are an SDE1 ask for 130k TC and let the recruiter break it down into base/bonus/RSU. 130k is not pushing it. I was offered 125k 4 years ago as an SDE 1 8 months out of college with no negotiation. I asked for 120 and they offered 125.

    They won’t negotiate on PTO.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Did your recruiter share a total compensation target? That number is what amazon intends to pay you each year.

If not, Your base + first year bonus is effectively your TC. Each year your total compensation should stay roughly the same, but shifting more RSU heavy as time goes on.

By the way, you can expect refreshers to keep your comp up if you stay at amazon longer than four years.

Curious, what is the package they offered?

base 108, first year bonus 18.5, 42 shares 5% on first year 15% second year etc. There isn’t a “target TC” I heard of. What do you think? So people don’t include stocks into “target TC” when they share their numbers online?

RSUs are included in TC. TC is basically the number you see on your W2 at the end of the year.

I forgot about the 5% vest in the first year. Your TC is 108000+18500+(.05*~2000*42) = ~130k.

Pretty typical SDE1 offer. Nothing amazing but you aren’t being low balled.

You could try and get a few more RSUs and a bigger signing bonus if you feel like it.

Sounds like it’s a very good offer for your market though.

Yeah I agree, for a city with luxury 1bed rent ~1300, I’m very happy with what they got me. I might instead try to push for early greencard processing. Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help!

It is NOT cost of living-based, adjustments by geo are market rate-based. I don’t know what parts of the US are discount markets, but I’ve gone to a much “cheaper” place to live and it was still a standard market so bands matched Seattle.

You mind revealing that "cheaper" place?

That might almost reveal who I am so can’t really say. It’s relatively small office. Not california.
