Has anyone left Amazon to go directly to one of these competitors? If so, any issues with non-compete, compensation or perception?
People do this all the time. Especially between Amazon and Walmart, pay is comparable, perception is that Amazon is a tech company doing retail and Walmart is confused. Target is slowly fading away. If you tell while giving your two weeks notice that you are joining one of them from another, they will securely escort you out immediately
Khol's, Target, Amazon
Non competes are unenforceable unless your a high level exec with special proprietary/strategic knowledge or similar and often not even then.
I’m biased clearly, but Target is not “slowly fading away”. What are you basing that statement on?
Finance and business news. Target’s direct competitor is Walmart and it is doing really well, the Omni channel strategy of target is not solid and Walmart has an advantage in grocery business attracting people to stores. Amazon is king at this moment when people don’t want to visit stores. It will be hard for Target this year but I want it to succeed for the sake of retail sector
Anecdotally I have to disagree, I’m in a Moms in Tech group who is obsessed with Target’s new omnichannel offerings, such as their home built Bopis with delivery to the parking lot. It just caters to a different market and I would argue that’s a good thing
I've worked in latter two and had offer from Amazon. No issues with non-compete as I'm an individual contributor. I know for a fact that Walmart Bentonville ain't gonna pay you even close to Amazon. Target might pay you close which makes it great as MN is cheaper. No idea about Walmart Labs. Also note Walmart is full of shitty politics. They care about who you know, not what you know. In that regards, Target culture is the best. Even WLB here is great! That being said, I was immediately escorted out from Walmart when I told them about my offer. I was paid though for those 2 weeks.
Target isn’t fading. Ironic that’s coming from Kohl’s who’s actually fading. Target comp for most IC and terminal level (L6/Lead) is very good for Midwest. 155k midpoint. But kohl’s is right. If you are leaving Target and share where you’re going they’ll usually immediately escort you out, regardless of level, title, or team rapport. It’s usually a concern about trade secrets etc.
Really !!! Do you follow business news ? Have you looked at Kohls stock price in last couple of years ? If you think Kohls is fading then you don’t know what you are talking about and not worth any more discussion.
I can say the same about Target. Don’t be so sensitive. This is the internet.
Target isn’t fading, we’re crushing it. Not a bad spot.
Amazon is clearly the leader in terms of pay. Walmart labs have gotten a lot better. Target is a distant third at least in Sunnyvale.
Is this just for SV? I was talking MPLS.
I don’t know how it is in Minneapolis. I have friends who work at both the companies and multiple data points for employees at Target. It is easily 30% less. Obviously amazon is a lot harder to get through. I was expecting them to be on par with labs.
Yeah walmartlabs beats any offer from target by a big margin. Target in Bay Area is no where on the list of 'goto' companies. Walmartlabs has invested a lot in positioning itself as a tech company and hired top talent from biggies. Now it's loosing the charm as hiring bar is coming down with each new hire.
Lol that’s not true. Walmart has a bigger footprint. No doubt. I don’t think Walmart is on the list of go to companies either. You are delusional if you think otherwise. Walmart tech is pretty shitty.
I'm not talking about stores. Walmart ecommerce tech stack is much better than targets. Just search for walmartlabs open source, Walmartlabs medium and meetups. It's totally new stack that was built ground up. Walmart made significant investments in technology and attracted top talent. Search for data science phd jobs at walmartlabs. You have to pay up to get talent. I'm saying this as I cleared interviews with Bay Area tech companies only to realize that I'm getting a meagre 10% hike at the max. Only faangs uber and some startups pay better than walmartlabs. It's consistently in top 25 Bay Area companies in terms of pay. What's the result of such positioning ? Walmart Eco mmerce is growing at a rate of 40% yoy 2018 - 20B and 2019 - 27B projected ecommerce revenues making it third largest ecomm site in us. Where's target ? Considering that both target Walmart were at the same numbers around 2011 in terms of ecommerce. Again it's no where close to Amazon, but definitely is a player with significant investments in tech and people. If you don't get into faang and offered the next best pay along with opportunities to work on latest technologies, won't you join that company ? Btw we try to beat Amazon offers, if the candidate has one, but people have other reasons to goto Amazon that's totally understandable.
Good question. I am also curious
