I have an on-site interview with Amazon advertising for SDE. Can someone help me with some details of this interview? How many technical rounds and what kind of questions can we expect ?
It's a great time to get into Amazon Ads related teams. Pretty standard interview process, and like the other reply said, there would be a strong focus on LPs if you are interviewing for SDE 2+ or if you have 3-4+ YoE.
-Be prepared with situations you have faced matching Amazon LPs. -Consider the STAR method while discussing them.
Are the technical interview difficult? What Kind of questions to expect ? And how many technical rounds do they have ?
Each loop is a little different, each BR is different. Generally speaking, expect 4-5 technical rounds. If your BR is non-tech, then most likely 4. Your recruiter should have some insight on the loop, better to ask him/her.
Advertising interviews will be slightly more difficult than other orgs. Still be prepared for leadership principles.
Why more difficult?
This is not true. I feel we have a lower bar than most other AWS teams
Will this be NYC or Seattle or other?
It is for Seattle
Other than the LPs, technical interviews have what we called competencies: 1. Problem Solving - probe your logical deduction skills and coding that solution out. Typically you will see problems that may require an “aha” or some sort of deduction. This is (should) never be any brain teaser or puzzles. 2. Data structure and Algorithms - aimed at testing your knowledge on using data structure to solve problems. Typically you will required to use two data structures together to achieve optimal solution. You may also get tested on BFS or DFS. Often this is disguised as a business problem. 3. Logical and maintenance - Aimed at testing your coding good practices like extensibility, open close principals, separation of concerns. This will mostly likely disguised in some sort of business problem and will sound very vague. Don’t lose sight and go for the technical solution then pull back and make sure your code is well written. Remember to write classes down and use OO principals but this is NOT system design so don’t over. 4. System Design - Aimed at testing your ability to deal with ambiguity, design with scale, availability and efficiency. Go beyond just OO practice and talk about database, system interactions, separation of concern AND MAKE TRADE OFFs. Explain your trade off based on what’s being asked. Each of these categories are done in an hour with 1 or 2 LP questions before asking this. Don’t think that LP questions can be skimmed over, I have seen many times LP answers failed the candidate. PM me if you have more questions and good luck!
Do you have any insight with SA (solutions architect) onsite interviews?
SDE candidates often fall flat in their faces in the LP part...which is most of the interview!! Come well prepared
I think most of us spend all our time on the coding/tech that when we get asked "Tell me a time where you mentored someone" we just look like deer in headlights and crash and burn.
OP, what was the phone interview like for that team? I have an interview coming up, appreciate any info!
How did it end up going?
