Alphabet has so far failed to lower the dependence of its revenue to the ad business (the huge investments in Waymo autonomous car division is an attempt of diversification that is expected to pay off.. but it will take a decade or more to truly ramp up to big numbers)

Not to mention FB, which is 100% an ad company, and wants to stick to this juicy business model (see how they have refused to own the "fake news" issue by denying being more than a tech platform, and how they are downscaling on media contents, to favor your friends and family posts -supposedly more addictive and therefore more attractive to ad publishers). Amazon is already a vastly diversified company that can make so many moves in so many more directions towards an always more integrated, centralized and ultimately fully controlled value chain. This is a much more robust position than FB and Google.

Ultimately though, I believe FB is more exposed than Google.

Thats assuming everyone buys groceries at Go-Go or Whole paycheck. I know about Prime video - I helped build its digital checkout in its infancy 😜. Have you seen the selection in Prime video? Thankfully its a free addon

    • So you say but over time I've found I am watching it more than Netflix

Your point? Making assessments based on personal observations seems like a poor argument.

    • I don't see this claim that Amazon isn't a media company. I guess I can add to my personal experience overhearing a family talking in Costco about how prime video seems good enough, and on top of that I guess there are statistics that do show lots of people using it.

I have prime video and Netflix along with I pick another paid service, rotating between hbo, showtime, etc, to watch their shows.

Notably I use the Amazon prime video app to watch that premium content so from an ad perspective Amazon is still getting that data.

One reason why I don't watch Netflix as much any more is that it's less convenient since it isn't integrated as an Amazon channel like HBO is. I only open Netflix when I'm looking for specific Netflix content like one of their excellent shows.

Of course Amazon is a media company. It started out selling books and today is the largest media distributor on Earth. I’m not sure how your personal lack of interest in Netflix is relevant to that or Amazon’s effectiveness in the Ad space.

Nope, Amazon isn’t a media company? Now, you’re just disagreeing to disagree.

Amazon sucks at ML tho, don’t think they can build a competitive ads system.

Ads systems dont need to be sophisticated. Tech matters to a certain extent, the ads game is all about exposure.

Really? Product Search is the best place to snatch business from Google. ML quality not as Google's probably, but quality of traffic is 1000 times better.

ML is a game to squeeze last 5% potential. That matters for Google, since they are already like 90% realization of that power. Meanwhile Amazon is like 60 or 70 percent, it just needs to get the ads business competitive to push it towards 80% without too much of the effort.

Product search is about 25-30% of all searches. I’m not sure what you mean by quality of traffic.

50% of that queries goes to Amazon, and Amazon has your shipping history

“Competition” and “threat” aren’t synonymous. Competition is positive and stimulating. Bears turning loose in the office are a threat.
