I’ve heard amazon engineers can pick between a pc or mac laptop, this true? Also, what kind of os do people use for their main desktop at work? Can you pick that as well? Role will be AWS in nyc if that matters. Current TC: 145k
Linux is an option as well. Support is good, no complaints.
You can do high spec MacBook, mid tier MacBook + linux desktop, or high spec pc laptop. You can also get a clouddesktop which is an ec2 instance that runs customized Amazon linux. Most people do high spec MacBook + cloud desktop
If it’s an Eng role I would highly recommend whatever Mac you like among your options, plus a cloud desktop. If you’re working on a hardware team you may need a physical Linux workstation instead of cloud desk but they’ll tell you that
Any specific reason for the Mac recommendation? or do you feel that someone will be at a disadvantage if they choose PC. I just finished my equipment selections and picked a PC because its what I currently use and didn't want to have to get used to a new OS on top of everything I'm learning during ramp up.
Amazon also supports BYOD I used my surface pro
Amazon's PC laptop options suck (poor build quality etc), which is a shame because quality PC laptops exist that are cheaper than Macbooks. It would be a frugal move to provide better PC laptops to engineers who want them.

Oh interesting. How’s the VPN support? One thing that sucks at Microsoft is there only a few VPN severs scattered throughout the us making it really hard to work remotely when I’m not in Seattle
I had no problems with VPN, never dropped to me, connection is similar to be in office
