Hey guys,

I recently got an offer from Amazon and I'm trying to figure out what the comp increase / bonus looks like. I would be coming as an sde2. How much does the salary typically increase ever year? And how does the bonus work?

Thanks!

It doesn’t. You’re stuck for at least two years while they tell you your bonus is being able to work for them. They will also tell you not to expect much increase because your “raise” is your vested stock in year 3&4.

    I wish I was joking...

Oh really? That would be so sad. I really thought the recruiter mentioned something about a salary increase. There's also really no bonus?

I second. Almost no increase for years 1-4, since your total yearly comp will include base+signing bonus+stocks, even if you're HE or TT. They don't tell this to you in offer letter.

The only real way is through promotion, which requires writing a novel and getting multiple levels up of approvals.

High or low performance really has no forbearance on your pay beyond promo potential and/or getting fired.

    Promotion would increase your base...eventually

Expect like 1-5% base for years 1-4.

So what’s the right pace strategy? I hit it hard year 1 not realizing not only is there no pay increase, but they wouldn’t even tell me my rating. Is the only carrot promotion? And what’s the time horizon to L8 coming in as a L7 non-tech?

Hit it hard and get your TT rating right away. Keep it up and be seen as someone who gets things done. L7 to L8 in a non-tech role often requires some green field program that goes big, so being a rockstar will get you that role with the opportunity. 5 years is not unrealistic but for most people it never happens.

5 years to L8?? Even with a few years at an L7 equivalent role at a prior company?
