Amazon feedback

Interviewed for L5. Recruiter called and said that, i did very well in all the rounds, but i didn’t get the job. Reason, i failed on one of the LPs and the interviewer thought i didnt have the backbone to challenge the manager. You will end up either being timid or being arrogant. WTF?!!! YOE: 18 LOC: Seattle

Ha! 230k. I don’t know why you would care about my current TC.

Can you elaborate on what was asked and what you answered? And yes, behavioral is tough..

Have you considered the possibility that this is valid feedback? One of Amazon's LPs is Have a Backbone; Disagree and Commit. As the applicant it's incumbent upon you to demonstrate that you will state an unpopular opinion but then commit to the decision.

I take all the feedbacks as a positive learning. But the point is when someone says you failed on something, you want to get bit more insight on that; and that is not provided. Especially when the recruiter says “we will bring you back in 5-6 months for another round.”

All the LPs are designed to contradict themselves

Amazon vDgePj Jul 29, 2019

And this is also true.

Cisco Day10 Jul 29, 2019

Could you give an example? I don’t think LPs contradict.

Amazon vDgePj Jul 29, 2019

Disagree and commit, RESPECTFULLY. Have a backbone.

Chase (╯°□°)╯ Jul 29, 2019

Based on OP's assumption that the hiring manager would view disagreements as a sign of arrogance, it's not surprising that he failed this LP.

You are given a situation which involves all the members doing what the manager asked them to do, but you don’t like it. How would you disagree respectfully and still do it? Just say “Hi Bob, I don’t agree with you because of xyz reason, but I’ll still do what you asked me to do”??? Wouldn’t that contradict the conviction you have about the point which makes you disagree with your manager?!!! Wouldn’t that make you look like you are either argumentative for sticking to your point or no backbone for yielding?

What does LP mean?

Verisk Analytics pinkfloyd🎸 Jul 29, 2019

Leadership Principle. Apparently Amazon is really big on it, in the interview process.

Facebook mturtle Jul 29, 2019

With 18 yoe, you are better off not joining amazon as L5

Amazon QIzY58 Jul 29, 2019

I’m surprised they gave you specific feedback. Also with 18 YOE interviewing for an L5 position probably hurt you.

You dodged a bullet

Google burnItDown Jul 29, 2019

If I say to the interviewer that the “Have backbone, disagree and commit” LP is an absolute bullshit LP that I don’t believe in, Is it negative because I don’t believe in the LP Or positive because the very act of saying I don’t believe in this LP is a form of having backbone, disagreeing and committing? 🤣
