So I have heard a lot of negative things about working at amazon. Like the benefits as not great, work life balance is not great and working environment is not great. Granted this is all subjective but there has to be a reason so many people stay and continue working for Amazon. What are some of those reasons? And why the benefits and other perks don't matter/ bother you? I am really curious because on this app I see negative comments about amazon all the time and I keep thinking there has to something that people don't know.
Work life balance really depends on the team and role. Pay is OK but I'm mainly staying because of the stock growth . I came from a small company which didn't have much perks so comparatively Amazon benefits isn't really that bad.
āIs the NYTimes story about people crying at their desks true?ā āCan I hang on in the notorious meat grinder that is the Amazon workplace?ā āHow is the richest man in the world dominating everything he touches?ā ^ to answer these questions
I had same question. My interviewers - all were 7+ years at Amazon. 12 years, 10 years, 8 years, 7 years was lowest. I was thinking this in interview that why are they still here if Amazon is so bad. I have seen lot of people sticking around to Amazon don't know why
It's a really good experience for a lot of folks. Really depends on team and org.
Survivorship bias?
I would never fuck with amazon but itās still a lot better than other options out there
Lmao because I get to work 35 hours a week on cool shit on a massive scale with people smarter than any other engineering job I've worked. And doubled my TC The on call part sucks once every 7 weeks but we had an oncall at my last workplace anyways
Like how people here move things forward
Because I can push something that makes all L6s and L7s wake up at night š
Most people stay bc of stock growth. Now that itās not growing and the costs are going up for the business (meaning profits will likely be constrained) the stock probably is going to stagnate, so people will start leaving. All of what youāve heard is true... sometimes you can find a good team with ok WLB but itās rare unless you go to retail. Benefits suck. Intense place.
The intensity is good for a short term as a learning experience, but eventually it starts to wear on you. Right around the time your shares start to vest actually lol...
I just did a poll and most people seem to think it will be $2200-2500 in two years. Whatās your take
I'm leaving as soon as all my shares vest. It's a phenomenal place to learn high quality engineering but you're very much a cog in the machine as an engineer. Being a cog gives you insight into how the machine functions though, which as others have said is invaluable, because the machine is really what makes amazon special (this is why it's hard for people to pick one thing amazon is phenomenal at aside from "customer obsession" because it's the whole that's special and not engineering talent, or management, or...)
So it sounds like a great learning opportunity but you gotta get in and get out after you vest? Is the rate at which people leave just ridiculous after 4 years?
It's super high at around 2 years I believe. Like I said in another comment, that's when it really starts to wear on you and why the stock vests heavily in the 3rd and 4th year.
