Amazon hate.. millennials want it too easy!

Amazon is a great company to work for. Across the board great innovation and good amount of ownership on tech and non tech side. The culture is a bit aggressive but if you survive you basically are an asset for most companies in the world.
I have heard way too many people complain about lack of perks. It’s weird that even after providing the least perks they have the max innovation coming out and some of the best devs working for it. Don’t you guys wonder why!?!?
Millennials can’t stop complaining.

It's funny because when I take my daily walks I never see people outside of Microsoft/Google/HP/etc smoking. The Amazon building has multiple groups of people who look like engineers standing outside and smoking cigarettes looking like they're suicidal and want to jump in front of a car.

You are missing a confounding factor. Amazon buildings tend to be taller rather than wider. If you see more people outside of Amazon smoking, it is likely because there are more people inside.

Who cares about innovation if you have to work like a dog and are treated like a disposable piece of garbage? Go have a banana with that koolaid.

The best perk in tech at this point is a 40 hour work week. All that other shit is there to make you work longer for less.
    Feb 6, 2018 5
    • Amazon gfd56uj
I work about 35 hours a week at Amazon.

In my last job I worked about 10 hours a week.

I like the higher workload, I'm putting in more effort because it's more of a challenge and I'm getting stuff done.

There are places at Amazon where people are working long days and weekends, but far fewer places than you would think.

Special projects / secret teams, are infamous at Amazon for having ridiculous hours, especially if they have Jeff's attention. But they are also famous for being career rockets where people get promoted fast for success. And you need to seek those opportunities out if that's what you want, most teams aren't like that.

In my org no one is working more than 40hr.

    Couple of points here.

    1. The best SDEs do not work at Amazon.

    2. I don't think Amazon is particularly innovative, at least not in recent years. It just uses its size, operational efficiency, and cash, to establish a competitive position in a given market.

    3. The caliber of talent is low, and Amazon is not well respected.

    4. Low comp and no perks show that Amazon is not an employee friendly firm.

I love Amazon products and services. I use them almost exclusively for many purchases. I have echos all throughout my house.

I have always loved Microsoft, as well. Windows 10 is awesome and I have always liked the office suite of products.

Google is cool, too. I use a lot of their services and their autonomous car research is really exciting.

Netflix continues to be amazing and I love the quality content they pump out. It's a great value.

Facebook pretty much sucks. I don't spend a lot of time on it. Of the companies listed here, that thing is nothing short of a pile of turds. Great for arm chair politics and spreading hate. I hate Facebook.

The perk thing is weird. Coming from a company with great perks it was a little annoying. They aren’t make or break but they are the soft edge that makes hard days not stick in your mind.
