Trying to get into Amazon.. have solved roughly 150 leetcode questions (70% of them are medium).. have been reading about system design as well, might be able to get good hang of in a month may be... my problem is in the area of object oriented design/patterns.. never done that even at academic level.. have 5 YOE and targetting L5 (SDE2).. the problem is being in cisco object oriented programming/design/pattern are nonexistent.. how should i prepare and how much should i prepare?

How well can you take 🍆 on a daily basis? Positively correlated to success at amazon.

If you can leetcode, why settling for Amazon?

Problem is not with my coding skills... i have solved all the LC problems in C.. in second round working on my JaVA skills as well.. problem is with design questions.. at cisco we solve problems.. its no way comparable to skills about “solving problems at scale”... as i said, reading a lot of material in the area of system design since a month now, already rejected by linkedin, was told, “i have quite a few strong points but week in other”.. so.. need to work on them. And as i said amazon seems to be good entry point to FAANG..

Try interviewing everywhere, with companies you care more about the last. It's a learning process and you have already done most of the work. Multiple offers will also help negotiating compensation.

Lol srs, if u did 150 leetcode you should be able to get in google and fb. Don't join Amazon as an entry point to fang, only join if you like the company.

@amazon.. well as i said somewhere in comments.. i dont have any problem in coding.. a LC medium question i can solve under an hour ( even if i havent looked at it before... out of that entire hour i spend most time on covering corner cases, not on core logic..)... the problem is, when all your life you focus on protocol stack, you never think about issues which are common in distributed systems... OOP is just one part of it.. since past 6 months or so, i have been reading about engineering challenges FAANG companies face in general ( scale at which these companies work, is completely different than any other...) and thats what excites me... and thats where i feel i am a little weak. Also, at present i think its not true that only coding skills can open any door for me... can you comment on it?

I only studied for three weeks but it was enough. You’re probably prepared. Make sure you have a good grasp of BFS/DFS problems as well as binary search trees.
I was also asked how I would construct a vending machine. For this portion make sure to study up on OOP principles. Beyond that I had one design question. Just be sure to be able to talk about a project you’ve worked on and how it was designed end to end. Be able to draw that out. After all that make sure to have 2-3 examples for each leadership principle.

My opinion: the interview seemed surprisingly fair. Don’t stress it.

Actually i am a C developer... almost all the work I have done is in the area of OS and infrastructure development..☺️ have done some coding in Java, but the part which i have coded can not be classified as OOP ( no way.. whatsoever..)

I guess the problem is I was ignoring all that before, and suddenly realising the importance of this area scared the shit out of me

If you screw up the system design question but do well on everything else you’ll probably just get downlevelled to sde I

Thats what i dont want.. i have 5 YOE.. dont want to start a fresh when i know i can get to sde2 level with 3-4 months of hard work.

1 to 2 is like 12 months anyways, I wouldn’t worry about it

Hmm... thats interesting.. what about difference in compensation?
      Oct 14, 2018
    • Cisco pj.thegame
the difference would be about 15-20k in base, 25-30k in signing bonus and about 30-40 units RSU, of course depending on your experience

best place for system design: buy grokking the system design and you should be good. likely, the bar raiser will go over system design in about 20 mins. it's important to talk through it. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES

How do/did you prepare for LP?
      Oct 19, 2018
    • Cisco pj.thegame
make up good stories for questions like "conflict resolution" , problem solving etc. and while answering, try to paraphrase their LPs. i suggest 2 stories per question. two people might end up asking the same question, so, you should have different stories

I took an interview with Amazon and I was asked how to design an object store

  • Amazon H3l5DkP
System design doesn't even typically focus much on object oriented design. It's often more about scale and distributed systems.
