Amazon interview

I argued a lot with an interviewer. While leaving, he asked me to a “chill pill and relax”.

But I did good in all other rounds. Aced round with hiring manager.

Chances?

Fault from both ends but a better question is why companies have such jerks to conduct an interview.

Arguing with the interviewer is a poor judgement call on your part. You are not in a level playing field when getting interviewed. The interviewer has all the power and holds the keys to you getting that job or not.

@Microsoft - that may be but then basically you mean no rules apply to them which is not the case. They should be humble.

That is a problem Amazon has to deal with. Choosing good employees to handle interviews on behalf of the company and giving them the right training.

Is Amazon culture really that bad?

I know a few people who work their, and they're all the type that would stab anyone in the back for a chance to move ahead.

I went into my interview expecting the people to be awful to deal with, but everyone was surprisingly nice. The interview definitely has this intimidation vibe to it that I haven't experienced at similar companies. But whatever.

On the way out of the building, though, I got trapped in the elevator with a large group of Amazon workers. They seemed TERRIBLE. Bragging back and forth to each other about how much money they spent over the weekend. Making fun of fellow co-workers. Etc...

They didn't seem like engineers, though. So not sure how bad it is in engineering. And obviously I don't want to take a small subset of the company and apply it at large...

He wants to drug you and have his way.

  • Sorry but that seems like a really strong signal that you wouldn't be an ideal teammate to work with. I think interviewers expect candidates to be at their absolute best, so I'd be very cautious and hesitant to see what a normal day interaction would be given that calibration.
On the bright side, soft skills is definitely a learnable skill and if you can manage that, it'll help in many aspects of your life.

Hard to gauge without hearing the conversation, but bad personality fit would massively outweigh good coding results in my book. If I had an alright time interviewing you, but hear another interviewer say "he was an asshole" and back it up with explanation, I basically immediately throw out my positive opinion.
I do not want to work with an asshole.

So, whether you were right or wrong, unfortunately it may have a big effect on results. Hiring committee is only going to be hearing their side of the story.

You failed the "earns trust" leadership principle. Autoreject

  • Hard to say. You may be a hire if they were testing “have backbone” leadership principle. Or reject if it was “earn trust”. Flip a coin.

A former boss of mine told me - "If you see a certain behavior at an interview, it'll be 1000x worse if you actually hire the person". It's true too. By that metric, I would have passed on you, OP.

But look at it this way, the interviewer was a jerk, so if ze was going to be on your team, you'd have had a shitty time anyway. Just lurking on blind the last week or so, I gotta laugh at some of the shit I read - interviewers don't get it - they're getting interviewed just as much as anyone else.

This isn’t a guaranteed problem. The debriefs strongly index towards the sum of the group feedback, looking for multiple data points of good and bad behavior. Any hiring manager worth working for will assess all feedback.

One offs can be one offs, or they can sink a candidate; it’s not guaranteed either way. If you don’t get an offer, this one concern may not be the reason, although it could be combined with other data points to form a more complete story.

You over indexed on "have backbone", under indexed on "disagree and commit". "Earn trust" may have been damaged. Not necessarily unrecoverable. Depends on how you did on the other four interviews, and whom you argued with.

      Have a backbone - Amazon’s LP.

But don’t be a jerk in an interview and argue. No one is going to like it.
