Amazon is the most hated and trolled company here in Blind, why is it considered so bad for engineers to be working there? They’re the most valuable company in the world and definitely carries a brand on resume. Given an opportunity to work as SDE at Amazon, would you take it? Tc: 240k
I got an OA1 coming up lol. Any tips 😂
Anything but amazon
What’s holding you back OP?
As of market close today they aren’t the most valuable company anymore, they have a perception of treating employees poorly, their comp doesn’t make up for the long hours, and their hiring bar is considered lower than other FANG and in my experience even Microsoft. As someone said already, it’s a stepping stone to get into somewhere more sustainable or higher pedigree.
It is a great company for truly stellar performers in high growth areas, since the learning and impact opportunities are unparalleled. It is also a great company for senior and principal level ICs who are treated like gold and L7+ managers who can be kings or queens of their domains. It is not a good place to come as a 10 YOE mid-skilled, downleveled L5. You will be miserable and unhappy. It is not a good company for a junior level person with mediocre communication and teamwork skills. You cannot progress here by being a good coder alone. You will not be happy if your team has small scope and a frustrated low-skill manager. Your manager has an immense amount of power, so go with a manager who has a track record of success outside and inside Amazon. Ignore the noise on Blind and make your own assessment about whether Amazon is right for you. If you read the 14 LPs and think yes, that stuff makes sense to me (except for frugality, we all hate that shit), it might very well be.
The leadership principles conflict with each other, and no one can excel in all of them at the same time. The principles are hardly designed to guide one’s actions, but to provide a means to attack others, at least in practice. Also, disagree with the point people who couldn’t survive are the ones with mediocre and below level of communication and teamwork skills. The culture itself does not encourage teamwork and collaboration. People with good collaboration skills who wants to cover each other’s back and contribute to the team, will be back-stabbed to leave/suffer. People who “think” they are the rockstars and love to succeed over others dead bodies will survive. It’s not about who is stronger. It’s about racing to the bottom and selling your soul to the devil, willingly or reluctantly.
Company with a shitty culture that is amazing for truly self-proclaimed stellar performers. You will not be happy if you're not a corporate dummy that has "Senior L80 Principal Architect Ph.D. Engineer" email signature
They sponsers visas so considered good in my eyes
Hell ya!
It’s a sweat shop. 🍆
Having Amazon on your resume === indication of workaholic +low TC + leadership principles === immediate hire
Wrong on the low TC, sorry bud. Won't argue on the others.
Amazon tc sounds almost like a scam to me, especially the total compensation cap shit! I don't understand how one can be motivated at year end after all the hard work and listening to - "oh you did great but you already got your bonus in stock raise"
You are confusing two mutually exclusive things. We are all smart enough to know having Amazon engineering on your resume is 24k magic. We are all also smart enough to know it's not a great place to work, so we use it as a stepping stone to get into greener pastures.
100%
What are whose greener pastures that open up with Amazon on the resume, could you share specific examples?
