How do you find out the level that you are interviewing for at Amazon? Its a Sr Business Intelligence engineer role and I keep reading about different levels here. Like l4, l5, l6 etc. how do I know which level does this role tie back to?
I used to work there and have phone screened with them a couple times recently. I just ask what level it is. If they say they can't tell me, I say I'm not comfortable moving forward without knowing level. There are lots of "senior" roles posted that aren't L6 these days.
Ask and be ready to decline the offer if anything less.
why is being l6 so important?
L5 money isn't competitive and you're more likely to get the shit end of the stick in work. Usually L6s get the good work. Not true in every team but it was in the 5 teams I worked on.
senior manager is L7, so it goes both ways. you may be interviewed for a level, but get an offer at a lower level as people are not inclined at L6 but inclined at L5, so it doesn't make sense to share what you are being looped at. ask once you get an offer rather than in the loop. God luck!
Ask someone from inside amazon to check the job ID. The job finder internal to amazon tells u the Level
True dat
how much do L6 and L7 make?
They usually level down post interview so be careful

For IC roles at Amazon, "senior" typically means L6. However, it's mostly for HR purposes (relative compensation bands) and doesn't automatically imply cross-functional seniority; that only matters on the traditional management track.
