Amazon manager who wasn’t a software engineer?

Palantir / Eng ya know if

I have an interview with a manager for a dev position, and from Linkedin, they were not a software engineer previously.

Is this normal at Amazon? Does it work out well when you’re on the team?

@utu I didn’t say it was a big deal. Was asking if it was a red flag because all my previous managers have moved up from SWE

I’m curious, is there some controversy around palantir that is prompting recruiters from not reaching out? Recently I read UCB revoked an invitation to palantir for some talk because of Palantir’s supposed role in helping out ICE detain illegal immigrants, etc. how much of this is true and how much false? What’s the vibe within the company about all this?

Because otherwise I’ve heard very good things about palantir engineering. Enough to definitely prompt more calls than fb and msft

I have seen a couple of PMs, that have never written a line of code in their life, getting into a sdm role, because all you need to know to be a sdm is know what services your service is dependent on. Why not? Anybody can become a sdm now. And these guys/gals now interviewing for sde2s and sde3s where they are assigned tech competencies such as System Design or algorithms. Let's get together and lower the bar! If you are lucky then such managers can be wonderful as you may get a free rein. But with most such managers.. Run..

Yep watch out for this. Amazon gives lots of power to manager. Chances are the team will be very unhappy under this manager.

If they're not technical then they're basically project managers
