Hi everyone, I recently interviewed with Amazon as an SDE and heard back that I wasn’t a good fit for an SDE role. However, I got asked if I wanted to join as a Support Engineer on the same team and then move in an SDE role. Is this a good idea? I’m currently an SDE at Abbott Labs
If you are SDE then don’t go. If you are support engineer then go, you will have better chance to switch internally.
I will go and switch later. Getting my foot in the door first. And as a support engr, I can see product in different angles. See it as an exchange program in the college and it would be just one year to experience different roles in the industry.
Absolutely not. Don’t downgrade from SDE. I’ve seen people get into support to get their “foot” in the door but what happens is once you get comfortable at a role and lose touch with problem solving then it’s harder to go back to software engineer. Also your resume might not be taken seriously by recruiters if you have support engineer from sde. Instead, continue working for Abbott and at the same time leetcode and chill everyday. 3 months later interview at FANG or other places and switch as a SDE
Yeah. This seems to be the best advice. I don’t mind what I do here at Abbott. And being an SDE for Cloud is something that I want to do. I’ll stick it out at Abbott and continue applying to other places.
Support engineer sucks at amazon. Its also very hard to convert from support to SDE(I would say virtually impossible and minimum 2 years wait time). Not worth it .
No, it's a trap. Do more LC and get an SDE role elsewhere.
💯 this ☝️
For sure. The recruiter was telling me that I could potentially move into an SDE role in about 6-12 months. Wishful thinking?
