Amazon offer renegotiate

Got an sde2 offer from amazon. Accepted the offer and all set to join next month. Looking at other blind posts, I get a feeling that I’ve made a bad job negotiation and accepted the offer too soon. I lost the excitement of starting a new position.
Is it too late to ask them to rewrite the offer?
what are my options?

Do you know what blind is? Even if jeff bezos were to land here, he would be convinced that he is making less than he should and it isn’t sufficient for his retirement. Take what you got and be contended and satisfied- that’s the best TC you’l evert get.

Think of that TC after baby comes. $2500/mo daycare costs! Not to mention healthcare costs and living costs in Bay area.

We are not in the bay area and my SO does chip in about 40k. Yeah, its not that great, but we’ll survive!

Experience at a no-name company isn't valued, MS is a very good company and equivalent to Amazon.

Without counter offers its very tough

May be those who got higher than this might be with counter offers.

Even I thought so and thus accepted the offer. But multiple posts suggest new offers get 280.

That is really rare. The usual band for sde2 is 190-250. You are at the top end of the band already. If you have seen a 280$ that isn't the norm. It has to be an extremely well negotiated offer with a rare skill set. Many L6 make that kind of money

U can get above band. I did. But they had to go thru vp approval. I got 265. Again I had competing offer thats why they came with 265 as initial offer. Ur offer is top offer for sde2 dnt feel bad. Your offer is top of band sde2.

280k is top of band in Bay Area. In Seattle, 240k is roughly top of band. Your offer is a good one in Seattle, don't let Bay Area TCs alone lure you, cost of living and taxes are much higher. If you want to relo to Bay Area, go for it, but don't compare apples and oranges.

Renegotiating is basically breaking up the contract. But 11yrs at MS to only SDE2?

I don’t think you’d lose much by reneging it. And are you from no name places before? should’t fall into non faang mentality which is absurd. Consider it again, it’s only sde2 at amzn.

In same boat. Didn't negotiate it properly and ended with low pay. Want to renegotiate, but will do it only if I have another offer else I'll join Amazon for now and will try to get another offer after a year and move.

240k is top of band for SDE2 in standard markets (e.g. Seattle). You'd need a VP-level exception to go higher. Most SDMs won't spend that kind of political capital (if they even have it) unless they really, really want you (e.g. you have some kind of past working relationship with them or come highly recommended by a current and well-respected member of the team).

In other words: no room to negotiate anyhow.

Anybody claiming they make more is either A.) benefiting from massive stock appreciation (if you joined in, say, 2017 you'd be vesting 40% of your original grant per year, issued at half the share price), B.) in the Bay Area/NYC or C.) lying.

      Apr 28
    • Amazon Break1M
If they got a higher offer, it required a VP exception and generally would be due to very strong competing offers, OR they were in Bay Area. Your offer is a strong one, run with it.

Yeah, I agree--it's strong. FWIW, for the sake of comparison, the L6 (SDE3) band starts at ~250.

Edit: you could ask the recruiter if L6 is on the table, though that's what they may originally have looped you for (at the very least, there was probably some discussion about it in the debrief). It would require a couple more interview rounds with a bar raiser and such.

That said, L6 has high expectations and it definitely won't be worth the stress and possible job loss unless the money is much better (IMO, after 4+ years here).

240 is top of the line for Amazon L5 in Seattle. Do not trust people claiming 250+. It's out of band.

I got a 250K+ offer after negotiation but recruiter mentioned that it requested VP approval (though I didn’t believe that at the time)

It does go to VP if you negotiate hard. Going to VP is a good thing, that means manager fights for you and values you.

I can tell u 242 is the official maximum in seattle for sde2. Above is “out of band” which requires vp approval.

The percentage of out of band is very small. Only possible if u have a competing offers and the interview went super and team wants and needs you so bad.

In a nut shell, u didnt miss anything. Your offer is top of sde2.

Yes too late. You should have done your research earlier. Renegotiating after accepting raises red flags. The only exception is if you have another offer.
