Amazon offer vs Google offer in seattle

I got an offer from Amazon in the project Amazon Go with the total compensation (160k, 125 base, 32.7 bonus (23k next year), 38 stocks in 4 years, 10k relocation). Now I got a package from Google in the project Duo in Seattle with the total compensation (169k, 125 base, 15% bonus, 100k stocks in 4 years, 20k sign on, 20k relocation). I've a few questions. 1. Comparison between the two projects. 2. I've one year of experience in a good company in DC. Are the salaries good for Seattle? 3. I had already accepted the offer in Amazon but now I'm thinking about the Google offer. In case I decide to go to Google what is the best way to tell Amazon? My joining is next week.

This is a no brainer. Take the Google offer and grow as an engineer and you will be rewarded more TC. Reject Amazon. Don't worry about getting blacklisted, it's not a dream job when you compare the benefits between Google and Amazon.

Amazon treats their employees worse than a divorcee treating their ex after divorce.

There is no L3 at Amazon. L4 is a college hire

Well we have L3s but only in support roles
      Aug 12, 2018
    • He’s saying SDE1==L4 in Amazon and L3 in Google.

We have L3 SDEs now but they're pretty rare. Called apprentices or something like that.

Amazon Go is so fucking cool. That shit is straight of sci fi. It’s the future of retail.

Duo is a failed chat app no one uses.

Do you want to work on something amazing or have a company that provides better comp and perks?

The underlying technology behind 'go' might 'go' somewhere but it will only happen when Amazon opena up thousands of stores nation wide.

On the other hand, other chains can come up with similar impressive systems by the time Amazon reaches that scale.

@foodtruckj you realize Amazon bought this company called Whole Foods with hundreds of stores, right?
      Aug 12, 2018
    • Proofpoint / Other foodtruckj
Sure. But again, how affordable is whole foods? Walmart prices are way cheaper and they have a much bigger presence in various states.

But you're right, Whole Foods acquisition makes it easier for Amazon.

At the same time, I would still go with Google for WLB and good opportunities within Google even if Duo goes down.

Life is too short to work for companies that don't treat their employees well.

The technology behind Amazon Go can be used in other industries too.

In terms of WLB, it really depends on the team just like any other big companies.

I don’t think the op can go wrong with either choice. There’s always the option of trying it out for a year then switching company if needed.

Do you use Apple products, or Android? If you're not an avid Android user, you should skip Google. Part of the decision making is about which ecosystem you want to be in.

Point being you don't work at Ford if you're a Chevy guy. Understand what motivates you intrinsically, including the hardware/software you use in your daily life, and let that help guide the decision. The money and titles are essentially at par, so what are the other drivers?

Worked on Go this summer. My coworkers all worked 9 to 7, fuck that shit. Go teams are disorganized stressful shitshows

Don’t listen to anyone drinking Amazon’s koolaid. It’s a good company but Google is much better. Better wlb, perks and TC.

What do you want to work on, Go or Duo? Life is less stressful when you work on something you find interesting.

Google sells ads. That is their primary profitable business. Amazon does a much wider variety of things that are profitable

Having worked at both I’d pick G. Agree Duo isn’t a great project but Go had a reputation for terrible WLB when I was there. If you’re a strong performer you’ll have internal mobility at either spot and G does a better job rewarding high performers.

Do you want to work on a me too video chat app or an innovative product with big growth potential?

You might try to squeeze some extra TC though out of AMZN if you show them the Google offer though

Google, of course. All things considered, your TC will always be targeted going forward at Amazon. The means zero or very little refresher with stock growth. Not true at Google.

It's a point. But even with growth, majority of folks will still choose Google offer over Amazon today. Why?

I see no signs of that. Also lots of Amazon folks trying to get into Google/Facebook

Turns out there’s a lot of google people trying to get in amazon. Just sat in an interview today with a current google engineer.

For what it’s worth, we’ve been getting a lot of FB and GOOG people that want to work on something meaningful (traditionally they’re in adtech at those companies).

Weigh in the type of work, TC, work life balance, benefits, brand name, and career growth.

Google wins everywhere when compared to your Amazon go offer.
Duo is an underdog, but working for it and making it better is where you learn more and that is what your job is. Moreover, you will still be working as a software developer so you will still get to write code and go through the full SD cycle.

You can grow a lot in Google. Even if you don't like to work at duo, you can switch teams since you have got a lot of options within Google. Moreover, Amazon's work culture is notorious plus Amazon is hire and fire kind of company so relatively less stable job, if you are looking for stability.

Just make sure you liked duo's team, manager and may be the tech stack (if tech stack matters to you a lot) at Google. If you do like those 3 things, go with Google for sure.

Both salaries are excellent for your YOE and Seattle.
Since you have already accepted the offer from Amazon, and now going to get away from working there, I would be talk to the recruiter and the HM in a very humble and apologetic way for sure and let them know that what you liked about them. Because they definitely invested a lot of time and energy on you and now are expected you to onboard which is not going to happen, if you go with Google.

I would go for Amazon! 160k is the max base you’ll earn in Seattle, but there’s the upside of Amazon RSU’s. Amazon Go is going to be the future - how cool is it to work on that?!

But when it comes down to your decision, think of the people you interviewed with and who you see yourself working with everyday...do you prefer the team from Amazon or Google?
