Amazon offices in SoCal

Does anyone here work at the Amazon offices in Irvine or San Diego? Especially interested in the San Diego office because I can’t find much information on what it’s like there.

How’s the culture and work like over there? How is it different from working at HQ in Seattle - are there less opportunities for career growth? Does it feel more chill and laid back?

San Diego is pretty nice and they just got a new building. There are some security initiatives there and at least one person in RDS. Irvine is pretty cool too, Alexa, video games. Manhattan Beach is toxic. It's some academic lab though. Santa Monica is terrible in video and studios. Not sure what else is at SM, but seems bad overall. Basically, Amazon gets better the further south you go in SoCal.

I don't know I just hear terrible things about SM office. On the engineering side... And then there's video.

      OP
Is Amazon planning on putting engineering teams in both buildings? Or just moving everyone over to the new one?

What's the data for Manhattan Beach office being toxic?

There are engineers at all of those buildings. MB's director is is empire building and one of their science managers has a YouTube video series that claims science is a farce. The team's goal is to be an elite research lab rather than accomplish anything. It's the blind leading the blind. AFAIK, nobody is moving, just staying where they are but I did hear IT claim several months ago that all satellite LA orgs would move to Culver City. That seems odd.

I work in SoCal but interned in Seattle. From what I can tell it is more laid back but not crazy different. Career growth opportunities are the same though. I’ve seen many people getting promoted but that may depend on org/team more than location. Honestly I like it more here than Seattle outside of work which makes the biggest difference for me. Work life balance is better out here I think but that’s just my experience. I think that depends on your manager the most.

Did you get a return offer after interning in Seattle? How difficult was it to get a full time return offer in SoCal if you interned in Seattle?

Is it safer to intern in a SoCal office if I want to return full-time in SoCal?

Nope. When you get a return offer it is not for a specific place you have to accept the offer and then you can fill out a survey about location and team preferences. Nothing is guaranteed except the job.

Is it a valid concern that the full time spots for a small location like San Diego may be filled up by returning interns to that location?

Yeah. I’m pretty sure you get highest priority to return to the team you interned with. I doubt they will fill up totally but there will definitely be low availability.

Ok. So if I want to work in SoCal, seems like the best course of action would be to intern in SoCal and not risk the placement lottery?

Seems like it worked out for you though, which tempts me to try Seattle...

OC office in Irvine is great. A lot of teams are growing like crazy (Alexa, Appstore, Fresh, etc) and IMO there are some strong tech leaders down there if you choose the right team.

SoCal does pay less than Bay Area. It’s in line with Seattle, though.
