I think that's crazy!!! Being contacted by Amazon HR, and being told Amazon L5 is Google's L6. I'm 6 at G now.

Amazon only gives SDE2 for Google L6???

Seems like they have bridged the gap between Amazon L5 and Google L6.

Go waste their time with the interview, and then demand 600k TC after they want to make an offer.

    Reply saying,

I have a higher expectation on Amazon than most other employers. If I find someone junior who is looking for a job, I will make sure to refer to Amazon level 5.

Meanwhile I have to reply to 10 other Amazon recruiters spamming my inbox.

    Thank you.

Pretty sure the recruiter has it backwards. I was L5 at Google and had offers for E5 at FB and L6 at Amazon.

Yes. L6 at Google should be a principal at Amazon (L7).

Lol not sure you should really bother going the Google -> Amazon direction anyway, for quality of life and engineering appreciation sake. This is an example of why, lol

This. Unless Amazon is offering significantly more money I would never move back to Amazon from Google.

That's just you though. Two people in my org have completed the the Amazon > Google > Msft > Amazon journey.

Amazon recruiting is a joke. I suggest finding a competent recruiter and forgetting this one

Also I would tell this recruiter that you're finding a better Amazon recruiter before leaving them.. they can't keep believing this garbage

4-12 years of exp for a lvl 5? I've seen fresh grads get lvl 5 after a year and a half of exp.

And my org has a bunch of SDE2s with decades of experience. The level is way too wide.

L5 is a wide band. Co worker joined as L5 with 8 yoe. I know someone joined as L5 with 10 yoe

Same with G l4 which maps to l5 at amzn

Amazon SDE2 is the UNIVERSAL role. I hear, Even Thanos was interviewed for SDE2. That's where he got angry and went for the infinity stones.

That’s ridiculous. Amazon L5 is a terminal level. That is, there is no expectation for you to move up. So you can stay as an L5 forever and you would get your stock and raises. As a result they have folks with 5-to-15 years of experience.

You can ask to be taken though an L6 loop and then make that determination as opposed to make it on the onset.

It seems that the SDE 2 terminal level is not as easy as it sounds. I’ve seen posts on Blind stating that some orgs/teams don’t support that notion. And from what I’ve seen being an SDE 2 puts a big target on your back, and SDMs will harass the SDE 2s who have “leveled off” in their contributions or made ordinary mistakes.

Yes, the point is that the bar is always “supposedly” being raised .. so if you want to stay at L5 forever you better be a rockstar (who typically move to L6) or you risk falling to the bottom and be managed out.

Some recruiters just don’t have enough industry experience to know the differences in levels across companies. One way to deal with it is to say what your current total comp is and ask if the role is in line with your expectations. She will come back with a different role. Btw, we are looking for L6 and L7 engineers here in Seattle for an AWS team. Reach out to me if you’re interested in learning more.

Amazon recruiters are contacting me with senior/principal roles and I'm just L62... Someone is smoking something and blowing smoke up your ass.

Expected, usually Google L6s get put 60/40 to SDEI/SDEII in my org

    • Google Bor
Technically you're right. With 0 Google L6s going to your org that statement is mathematically sound.

I got L5 at Amazon while I got L3 at G. Same for a lot of people I know.

I’m pretty sure that’s just a stupid person who just thinks Google L6 is equivalent of Amazon L6, and trying to say that get one level lower at Amazon.

  • Google topCon
Op, only move to Amazon for 2 levels up. 5 is already a 6 there.
    Feb 11 0
  • It’s a lie should be the other way around
    Feb 11 0
  • Google Mmkaay
I think the recruiter is just confused. It is the other way around. Google levels start at L3, Amazon starts at L4, so roughly Google L5 == Amazon L6. Could just be a dumb recruiter
    Feb 11 0
  • Amazon outoforder
Don’t take it personally. There are always some dumb recruiters. They need to meet their quota. Multiple AWS recruiters contacted me on LinkedIn while I was already working at AWS!

Also, from some other company two recruiters contacted me. One for a 350k Tc permanent position but another contacted me for 150k contractual position.
