Amazon operational work load for a SDE in SageMaker

Hi everyone,

Just started 2 months ago as a new grad SWE in SageMaker org working on a pure ML product and have some concerns. The team is divided in two (SDEs and Applied Scientists), Applied Scientists are doing all the interesting work and SDE are doing only ops, mostly working on pipelines. As SDEs we rarely get the chance to ship features and when we do it’s some boring feature that make our product more reliable.

Manager and teammates are nice but doing only ops work is slowly killing me, I started to hate my job. I’m thinking about accepting an Uber internship that may lead to full time.

I don’t have experience outside my team and Amazon so I’m wondering if Software Engineers doing 80-90% of ops work is the norm in other orgs/companies as well? And for Uber Money team, should I expect the same?

It’s not normal. My team, also under AWS has about 40% ops load is already the highest among our sister teams, and everyone’s very unhappy.

And when you work on features, are they mostly features to make the system more reliable ? Or real features that add functionality to the product ?

Yeah. Mostly for better reliability. Even worse, cuz the teammates know there isn’t much “meaningful” features. Some tend to re-assign shitty tasks so they can move on to better ones when it comes

I see. Is this something common to work only on reliability of the product. Or we just have bad teams?

Is this the same for all SDEs in the SageMaker team? Once interviewed there, glad I didn’t join

Probably in all teams where you find a good number of applied scientists. Could you tell me if I should expect the same in Uber Money team?

I’ve heard from a SDE 2 in SageMaker it’s all ops and pipelines. On call is brutal, he’s trying to get out after only a few months

I recently left Uber and was not familiar with the money team. Perhaps other folks from Uber can comment here.

Ugh...I’d only stay if you wanna be SRE post amazon. You’re missing out if you aren’t writing code and learning good habits but why would you wanna be an intern?

I just started at Amazon so the Uber internship would be post graduation (which is around November).

Most services within AWS are like that I think, unless you join a brand new service, or some very specific tech like SQL engine
