So it takes quite a while to go from sde2 to sde3. Does amazon expect you to make the same for all those years until you get promoted? Are there performance reviews each year to give you more money within the same level?
Each level has a pretty wide salary band and so you can definitely expect more compensation over the years if you produce good work http://levels.fyi is great for seeing the rough edges of the salary bands + has some info on career path progression
There's a lot of data out there and one can use it to leverage salary or bonus. What worked for me (am not from Amazon) is show your manager that you are paid below average (by picking only the ones that show your salary below average ;))
How many units does the average sde2 receive during the annual review? There is no cash bonus, and pay bump must be minimal due to cap. So everything must be stock. Any average to consider?

SDE 2 has one of the widest pay bands at Amazon. If you are a good performer each year, your compensation will increase after each yearly review. Unfortunately, Amazon caps base salary at $185k/year in the Bay Area, and $160k/year everywhere else, so once you reach that, you can only get increases in other forms of $$
How does amazons policy where they want you to make X TC factor into this? I've read from other posts that it made no difference in TC for people who worked hard, thus why they left.
The frustration is that the company’s actions don’t look appreciative because your “raises” have been from appreciation of stock. You see a tiny bump in base and a new grant that is smaller than your current grants that vests in two years frankly looks like a pay cut. Because the stock has doubled or tripled and that was 40% of your comp so you’re at 140% of your target.
