Amazon sde 1 offer

Apr 17 16 Comments

Graduated with ms in CS for Top 10 CS in USA and 2 yoe, working for IBM for 1 year and make tc $150k

Amazon offered
$115k bass
58 unit vesting %5 for 1st year ,%15 2nd year , %20 every six month there after
$40k 1st year sign on bonus
$30k 2nd year sign on bonus

My total comp comes to $160k first year but given how chill I am at ibm and everyone is super nice and no hard work at ibm compare to amazon
I was very disappointed with amazon offer

Ibm and amazon at nyc office

What would you do if it was you ? How can I get minimum $200k for amazon offer to feel better and comfortable accepting their offer ?

F blind and u. It’s just become a routine to call every tc post lowball. This by no means is a lowball

Agree with fern vbv. F blind for tc discussions

    • It's definitely a lowball if Amazon is paying just $10k over his current TC at IBM. Firstly unless you're in a toxic environment it's not worth changing companies for $10k. Secondly, in my city Amazon pays 25% higher than IBM at a minimum.

Doesn’t matter which city in the US, 160k is great even for Bay Area. So shut the nonsense about your city. Also companies pay based on their band, unless they really really want you. In this case it’s OP’s choice to take it up or not. But 160k for SDE 1 is definitely not LOWBall. Hence choose which offers you say that to

Hey f face! I say lowball because I know people have got more than what OP is getting with 1 yoe. Learn to accept there are people who can earn more than you. Not every comment is a joke/sarcasm. Dream big and you shall have it.

I like to add on to what kimsoo said. Often it is not just your YoE but also the work you get exposed to. It feels sad sometimes to interview candidates with 3 yoe, but wasn’t able to work through a design question, not for lack of ability, but really because of a lack of exposure.
So no hard work and having super nice co workers are great, but you just started your career, there is so much more you can get out of it. If you are learning and growing, that’s great. If not, think about what I said, hope it is of some help.

Offer is normal. With the new experience, you can move with a TC bump in 1 or 2 years

It depends on your experience and how competitive offers you have. Check h1bdata.info for sde 1 and location, you’ll get a rough idea. And i did have a better offer which helped me rise of pay, not much compared to initial offer.

150k, you should be level 8 at IBM. Why don’t you try for sde 2. You should be making roughly 200 k for sde2

What band are you at IBM? 150k has to be near max for your YOE.

The only way to increase your offer is if you have a higher offer in hand.
