Amazon still good?

I landed an amazon position. It’s a good SDE II offer at 300k TC. At first I felt really good about cracking a “top tier” company. But the more I read here about all their (or lack of) benefits...I cannot help but wonder if Amazon is still all the rage. I worked hard to land this spot...is it still the resume builder it once was?

Anyone able to offer any reassurance that this is still a good place to be for a while?

  • Yes, it’s still Tier 1. Still the resume builder it once was.

Not having free food and other random free shit...is fine. Doesn’t make a company any better or worse.

Think of the long game. After your first FAANG, your market demand and TC skyrockets. Everything gets better.

That’s what I wanted to hear. Thanks. The little bits of free food and what not...eh. I’ve grown out of it...mostly. Like you say...I’m in it to further the career growth.

Perks don’t matter. The scale of amazon surpasses almost every other company in the world. Hell, I was looking at one service dashboard today that has 16 million operations per second. Experience at that scale is what matters. Not stupid perks.

You can find that scale at Microsoft and google/Facebook etc

Yeah, at all of maybe 5 other companies. That’s why it’s still a tier 1 company and why it still opens doors. Perks don’t mean shit.

They obviously matter, why would I choose amazon over the other 5 companies. Everyone knows Amazons work life balance is shit. Everyone who left amazon never want to go back to that brutal work place

I've been at Amazon for 6 years. I've had pretty good teams during my time here so I've been happy with my overall experience. That said, I've heard horror stories from teammates about their previous teams that make my skin crawl. So as most people will probably tell you, a lot of it is team dependent. That, and make sure you're a team player.

All retail (Amazon.com). I'm sure you could get some AWS folks to chime in on their experience

Got down leveled in the interview process. But it’s ok. Tc works. And it’s fair...given limited experience as an actual SDE.

Don’t worry about year 5. If you don’t get promoted to SDE3 by then, then most likely you’ll be PIPed. Amazon isn’t a rest and vest company.

Ok. Sure. But are the stock refreshes gonna be enough to keep me in the lifestyle I have become accustomed to?

What's the actual break-down? i.e. base/signing/shares (#)? I'm really curious, because of how high that TC figure is (again, it's well into the SDE3 band).

Regardless, you will go to the bottom of the compensation band in year 5 if you weren't getting TT ratings a year or two prior, so there WILL be a cliff. For SDE2, that bottom is just over 180k (currently--it'll be a bit higher by then); whatever refreshers you get will be just enough to reach that figure.

That said, you won't be PIP'd if you don't reach SDE3 in 4 years if you're still performing well at L5. L5 is effectively terminal in many orgs; I knew and worked with L5s who had been here 10 years, and that was back in ~2014.

This is why I expect to job hunt in four years. A 70k pay cut isn’t going to be very cool. Base is 155. 210/signing over 2 years. The rest is stock. 5/15/40/40 vest.

This may very well be true for a regular SDE2 but not for a 300k SDE2. If OP’s comp is way out of band, then the expectation will be top-tier performance and relatively quick promo to SDE3.

OP, you can start in Seattle and move to Minneapolis in a couple of years if you want. You’d keep your RSUs and we have a reasonably sized retail team there.
