L5 at Amazon, L63 (senior) offer at MS. The offer TC is higher for MS in comparison with the current Amazon TC (cliff), but if I compare it with L6 of Amazon it's much lower. It's somehow like the regular TC of L5 at Amazon. Would you consider this move in general to be a downgrade? I mean I feel the senior title of MS is much lower than the senior of Amazon. Yoe: 5 TC at Amazon: 190k TC of MS offer: 250k Location: Seattle
MS stock looks strong in coming years. So, could be good.
It’s more money right now. You’re not getting L6 comp for at least 2 years even with a promo to L6 today. There are also real benefits at MSFT like an full 50% match to 401k contribution, ESPP, no medical insurance premium, and discounts on MSFT products and software. You have the weirdest idea about “downgrade” especially comparing it to something you don’t have.
I know :( I just feel L63 is L5, so it's not an upgrade in the level, and MS in general is not such a leader company as Amazon (in cloud). So deep down I have this "downgrade" feeling.
L63 is senior swe at msft right? levels.fyi
No--on the surface, this is an upgrade. Modest increase in scope, and almost as much money as you'd get as a newly promoted L6. It's true that MSFT 63 isn't quite on par with Amazon L6, but don't buy into the L6 hype. Promo TC is shit and the role is overscoped in many orgs; I busted my ass working on cross-org collaboration while also trying to keep up with my then-L5 responsibilities (pushing code) to get promoted into what really should be treated as a glorified team lead role (which I'd already been doing for years prior). The upside to it was that the growth got me a massive increase in money outside the company--but honestly, if you're already capable of it, it'll show through when you interview and actually grinding it out at Amazon is just going to be a waste of time.

Thanks. Are you saying that the newly promoted L6 at Amazon earns 250-300 since the promotion day/year? I interviewed with Fb/G/U and in all of the I rocked the design interviews, such that during the interview the interviewers told me things like "your design skill level surprised me" and "I want such a design mind to be in my team", and even the feedback after the interview was saying the same, but I didn't pass them because of the coding part which was "on the edge". I know that was because I didn't really practice any LC (I know I was stupid). So I know I have a high probability to pass the interviews of those top companies next year if I practice LC this year. But I just want to make sure going to MS after Amazon doesn't hurt my career (i.e. doesn't look bad on my resume).
Tc breakdown?
What's the TC in Dropbox (for senior level)? I'm just trying to see what this number falls in comparison with other companies' senior level TC.
Can you break down your offers? Base/RSU/Sign On
✅ Higher TC ✅ Not treated as a corporate slave ✅ effective 20 hour max / weeks ❌ no free bananas Idk. Looks like a downgrade to me.
^^^^^^ South Indian!
Don't think about upgrade/downgrade you can always come back to Amazon with a higher compensation. There is a lot of engineering exchange going on between these two companies for years.
My friend was senior in Amazon and came to Microsoft as Principle. Not only as principle but also at 66 level.
Which means levels at MS are less than Amazon's, and that's why I feel it's a downgrade. Any idea about the TC?
He negotiated - he was offered senior at MS first and said he laughed on phone with recruiter :) then upgraded the offer from 64 to 66. It was few years back their comp might have increased since then but he mentioned base was close to 200k at that time. I don’t remember the stocks though.
So your "Yes" is the answer to "is it a downgrade"?
