L6 TPM at Amazon for 3 years. Overall 13 years of industry experience. I am being offered a Senior PM role in MSFT. Looking to hear from the folks here if the leveling seem right. Also, what compensation to negotiate for. Any other negotiation tips would be super helpful too. Thanks!
It kinda depends on your age and ambition. If you want to rest and vest, just go
Do you know if it's level 63 or 64? Don't go as 63
😆
You should be a 64 or ideally 65 with 13 yoe. Do not accept 63.
63 or 64 doesn't matter if TC is right. I don't see 63 making 300k though, so it's probably 64.
Career growth is likely to be much slower at Microsoft unless you have a great manager who advocates on your behalf. And even then much less opportunity for advancement than Amazon has had the last few years simply by virtue of the number of heads they’ve added. I think In the general case, for *most* people it’s a much more pleasant environment than Amazon but many groups will feel slow compared to Amazon and if you have a crappy manager or GPM it can be more miserable than Amazon. On the whole, I was happy with my decision to move but it depends on what you’re looking for. If your L6, would echo shoot for L64 or L65 but be aware that much of one’s success at Microsoft is having connections and know how the politics work. I think this is even more true than at Amazon, where of course it’s also true. And expectations at L65 will be fairly high.
Thanks for the detailed response and guidance! I did ask for Principal but the recruiter said that the team thinks I am at right at Senior level. I’ll confirm 64 level though.
Don't join msft as a senior unless they are paying you more money. You'll definitely stagnant your career at msft... Senior at msft is equivalent to mid L5...
Thanks for the advice. They will pay a total comp of around ~$300K. Yet to see the specifics.
