If I join Uber, will it be easy to go back to FNG?
4yoe all at FANG.
Is it considered a downgrade?

I mean ... Uber guy is saying that. I wanted to see if FANG people believe the same.

Does it matter if FANG believe that? Everyone is chocking on their Kool aid.

It does matter because I don't want to go to a company that lowers my job security. I don't care about people's opinion unless if it affects my job hunting or TC.
Like if going for a company that is considered a downgrade causes less chances for future job opportunities or less TC, I wouldn't want to go there.

I have been working intensively with Uber engineers and they are awesome. We are, in general, over hyping the FANG or GAMFA and it's sickening. There are some pretty cool companies out there doing great work and offering sweet TCs and I think Uber is one of them. I don't look at that transition as a downgrade esp if you will be working on projects that will help you gain new skills. 295 TC for Seattle with 4 YOE? Go for it . Good luck.

Well putting U in the same level as F makes believe you're very biased.

I went from Amazon to Uber, and get pings from FANG all of the time. The quality of engineers vary at Uber in comparison to Amazon, but I have been happier at Uber. The WLB is much better than Amazon, but sometimes I miss the sense of urgency from Amazon. At Uber, we sometimes get stuck in analysis paralysis.

I’m a senior, but in a different job family. The RSUs are vested over years with a majority vesting in year 4 or my 5th year.

Ah I see. Any data points for software engineer refreshers?
      Jun 15
    • Uber uKWz22
It’s probably around that amount depending on your initial offer. The RSUs were inline with 1 year of RSUs from my initial offer.

What do you mean the quality of Uber engineers varies in comparison to Amazon? Are you saying the median is the same but there’s higher highs and lower lows at Uber?

SDE3 = Staff at Uber. There isn’t principle engineers like Amazon has. The Senior Eng bar at Uber varies the most. Some are great and others can barely write a design doc.

I think you’ll have more opportunity to work on interesting projects and push yourself. It depends on you what you make of it. Yes, you’ll get pings from recruiters.

People, I see a lot of emphasis on TC with less so on career longevity and future prospects. These should be as equally important factors as TC and the brand value of the company you plan to join. Any thoughts or am I just high on vitamin water and I should focus more on TC?

I mean if I learn something technical it's mostly for the sake of getting higher TC.
