Amazon visitor require ID?

Visited different Amazon locations for different cases, for Amazon external events and on-site. Why do security ask for id? Not just any id like a badge, but must be official ones like driver license? Is this common in bay area?

Even when I sign my wife in to the office as a visitor they check her driver's license. They actually look it up somewhere. Maybe there's a blacklist? Dunno.

The only exception is the Spheres. They still ask for ID there but if you say your guest doesn't have it with them they just ask you (Amazon employee escorting them) to vouch for them and let them in anyway. I guess it's a less sensitive location with so many visitors there all the time.
