Amazon vs Airbnb vs Facebook

Sep 7 111 Comments

I was fortunate enough to get some offers from different companies. Now I have to decide.

YOE~10
Bay Area offers
Final offers
Amazon SDE. III: TC 340 (weird vesting schedule)
Airbnb l5:. 210, 20% bonus, 750k equity, 45 sign on TC ~450
Facebook l5: 200, 15% bonus, 600k equity, 100k signon TC ~405

Amazon is almost out of the picture because lower TC.. I guess being the first interview didn't help on TC. But thry helped me to prepare for the rest and it was a fun process with them too.

Airbnb has highest TC but they haven't IPO yet, so that may be risky (I don't need liquid cash though). Also the position offered is (a priori) not so interesting , or in other words,, less visible and the stack is older (mainly Java). I also had the impression Airbnb is less social due to being a smaller campus (but I may be wrong). However, no commute, higher compensation and 2k yearly Airbnb credit is nice though.

Facebook has cooler projects and uses newer stack, it has a bootcamp where to choose team and a very good perks, amazing campus and 20 PTO. I also had the impression FB campus has way more activities that allows you to socialize more. Buut it requieres to comute and a potential worse WLB. So it looks like I will be working more hours for les TC than in Airbnb

I am lliving SF, Design district so I am walking distance to shuttles and Airbnb building. I may trade commute for cool projects. However is harder to me to trade TC just d'or cooler projects.

Thank you all!

I am trying to switch from java to python, did your language of choice make a difference?

My opinion is python is perfect lang5ugue for interviews. Reason is it is very fast so you can spend your time doing algo stuff, not defining vars

The commute from SF to FB will eat up your life, I don’t recommend. If you take the shuttle it can be around 1.5 hours each way.
    Sep 7 7
    • OP
Sorry but I didnt get it: So you are comuting in the morning? Is it doable for you working at the shuttle? Do you still have time to other things during the day (gym or socialize)? Thanks!

OP, go to work early leave early is not something that you just thought off. Half the valley has been doing this since last 5 years and 101 gets crowded at 7AM and 3PM.

FB L5 RSU can go upto $800k..ask fb recruiter to match Airbnb
    Sep 7 14
    • Facebook usule
Nope. Google L5 RSU can go upto $900k..FB can go upto $1M. Standard is $500k yeah. Trick is to get a competing offer ;)

Nice, good to know.. I was lowballed then hahaha. The recruiter told me we're giving you 600k RSUs which is the max blah blah..

What is your one reason to join Airbnb? Wlb, more money is a myth. Wlb here depends highly on team. Can go either way. Money is currently paper and no one knows which direction it'll go.

Fb can go to 700K stock try negotiating.
      Sep 7
    • OP
Thanks . All offers are final.

What is what you don't like at Airbnb personally?
      Sep 7
    • OP
Reason to join Airbnb is I use the product a lot (more than fb) so I like it. No commute, better TC. Worse WLB to me is doable nas long as it is comoensstred accordingly

The reasons tor join FB is some specific projects motivates me more, name, perks, future.

Adobe is just mad at where he is - don't mind him. I'm risk averse, so I recommend FB. Cash and actual liquid RSUs is king. IPOs for well known unicorns are not doing so well in this climate as you can see.

What’s your strike price at Airbnb?
    Sep 7 5

Good question. I have to confirm that but per some informations the sure price was lower due to some adwuisition.

Facebook is a special place but it will always be here. Airbnb will go ipo and you’ll make a shit ton of money. Why do you think we have 24 year old millionaires running around the valley? High risk, high rewards.

What I have heard is internal promotions (l4 to l5) puts you on the lower end of L5. While if you get hired as l5 you get a better deal.... Not sure if this is true but if so , not fair.

You should also consider refreshers into the equation. Does AirBnB have em? If not, FB is da one!
      Sep 7
    • OP
Per recruiter, Airbnb has refreshers .but would be great to hear it from someone at Airbnb
      Sep 7
    • Airbnb gyhvv
I joined not too long ago so haven't got refreshers yet, but have definitely heard that they are great! Should be about a fourth of your initial grant every year

I agree that fb would maybe have more social life because of no of pple and campus size. But wlb can be extremely bad, commute is not worth it, there's less stock upside, and impact is lower cuz of large company size. Airbnb is all ex G,Fb pple who were looking for more impact. Also, product work is incredible at Airbnb and it's super cross functional with interactions with designers, content strategists etc. Tech work would probably be more interesting at fb tho.

All in all, I'd hands down choose Airbnb again if I were in the same position.

You stand to make more from AirBnB if/when they go public.
    Sep 7 3
    • OP
Well, you never know that. It is true that Airbnb is making money (or they say that). But see IPOs this year. Alll are under water or close.
      Sep 7
    • How many IPOs this year were profitable though?
      Sep 7
    • Airbnb gyhvv
Also feel that the fact that Airbnb hasn't ipoed yet is a plus, because there is an insane amount of upside on the stock because the business model actually works. Yes, IPOs like Uber and Lyft have been horrible cuz they are bleeding, but Airbnb is not in that category. And because of rain expirations, it's a sureshot IPO next year. So it's the ideal time to join and if IPO doesn't go well, you can leave. But I personally feel it'll be great
      Sep 7
  • Microsoft wtfseattle
What makes people think Airbnb stock will be ok when they IPO? Look at former unicorns like Uber, Lyft, snap, slack, etc.

One thing pple haven't mentioned yet tho is that the bonus at Airbnb has been announced for this year, but we don't know if it'll be there next year. Would assume that they would announce a similar bonus for next year tho.

      You mean that 20%, correct?

      Yup

Also, its not 20% but depends on company performance. Actual will be lower. 20% is best case.

Really good to know. So 20 is the max

General TC question, how do you calculate stock value for AirBnb if they haven’t IPO’d?
    Sep 7 2
    • OP
Airbnb have a strike price per stock. They divide the grant per that price (so 750k / 128$ if I am not worng). That gives you the amount of stock granted to you for the next 4 years.

If the stocks appreciates to, let's say 200, you make even more than what it was granted to you

If the stocks depreciates to 50$, the. Your grant is reduced to more than 50%

If it never IPO, you get 0 ( probably Airbnb has some buyback programs, but would not be much profitable)
      Sep 7
    • OP
Btw, same happens with public companies. They not Ally use the average of the previous month or quarter you join to determine the stock price.
      Sep 7
  • Amazon 22plnkstr
our vesting schedule is weird in a good way; it’s advantageous to get cash first every month. It’s better unless other offers vest every month with no cliffs. would not be unexpected if AMZN higher than FB when all’s said and done. Airbnb who knows when you’ll see the money.
