Hi all. I am lucky enough to receive an offer from these two companies as a new graduate. I wanted to know how diverse these two companies are, specifically the software engineers as that is the space I would be in. On top of that, I wanted to know how welcoming these two companies are to engineers that come from different backgrounds. It's very important to me to be in a place where I feel comfortable and not looked down upon for anything other than the quality of my work. I've had a few bad experiences in past internships where my race/identity were brought up behind my back, or I was treated without respect. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)
I think it's about the same whereever you most engineering is Asian plus some white, with very few blacks.
Tech is dominated by asian, east indian and caucasian. Outside of these three groups there is very little diversity. You will feel like an outsider and may be treated that way at times. Especially if in Washington State. If $$$ is your mission go with Faang. If being around more people that look like you is the goal, find another profession outside of tech.
Get the FAANG experience. Amazon is very diverse and does not discriminate.
Thank you! That is great to hear :)
With Amazon brand name on resume, I think getting at Credit card companies or Banks, will be piece of cake. I would go for Amazon. Regarding diversity and other marketing terms being thrown out there, are more for morale boast, does not give much value to individuals.
Most captial one people move to amazon so just go straight
At my Amazon building, we have a grand total of 1 black employee in the whole building.
About the same at the other buildings as well.
Go to Amazon!! Cap one sucks
How much diversity you see and interact with at amazon will be team/locale dependent, especially in regard to software engineers. Rumor has it capital one has more diverse engineers but I donât work there. In regard to how welcoming amazon is towards diverse engineers, again thatâs also team/locale dependent. You may get discrimination but hey, thatâs just part of being in the US.
I had offer from both and I joined Cap One, I had low base from Amazon but more RSU supposed to be invested in 3 years, okay , may be I would have got few grands more but I see how my friends who chose amazon are crying about WLB., at least for me it is good and pay is good too, diverse culture, people respect you if you truly work hard and company takes care of you very well. Also I noticed, most people who say amazon pays more , they havenât worked at Capital One, nor lived their culture OR they dont notice that amazon pays more in terms of RSu which takes 3 years to fully vest and by that time they leave. Choice is yours! I would say, come to Cap One, work here for couple of years and leave if you dont like it, I am sure, you will at least have good WLB.
Well, not counting RSU's, the difference between my Cap1 offer and Amazon offer is $40K. It's a big difference for me to be honest
If cap 1 is offering 40k more than the amazon total compensation, take it. You may not learn as much not work on super ground breaking technology stuff, but you could be pretty stinking happy.

Don't know what you're smoking - engineering is one of the few places with very diverse candidates, both companies should be fine, but Amazon would probably look better on your resume and pay more
Well, I've looked at a few statistics from G and FB, and at both places only 1% of their software engineers were black. On top of racial diversity, I was also wondering about economic diversity. I grew up in the south side of Chicago and generally live my life very frugally. Either way, thank you for your response :)
@josemo who cares. You don't join a FANG for social justice reasons. It's either to make lots of money, work on some of the most challenging tech systems in the world, or launch products that millions to billions of people interact with.
