I am L6 SDM close to L7. I got an L6 offer from Google with $520K TC in Sunnyvale. 1. Wondering if I should wait and become L7 at Amazon (probably Q1 2020) and aim for FAANG L7 or move to Google? 2. How easy is it to grow to L7 in Goog? 3. what is the minimum management experience for L7 interview with Goog?(I had to delay my interviews to meet Google’s 3 yoe for L6)? YOE: 10(3+ in management) TC: 390K
And people like these are know all gurus on blind. He knows everything about Google while working in IBM. May be you should focus on getting out of IBM rather than gossip around on blind.
What if he is working at G and IBM is his previous employer? Just saying.
It sounds like you are confident enough to crack Google in future as well. Stall the offer until you get promoted to L7. Negotiate for L7 at G and take additional interviews for L7 and see how it goes.
I wouldn’t wait. They will almost certainly downlevel you to L6 based on the info you shared. Fast promo to L7 is 2 years, and the later you start the later the clock on 2 years starts.
Thanks for info. What is the average?
Fast promos are extremely rare. Everyone tells themselves that they will get fast promo because they are joining part way up the ladder, but that's so common it's baked into the average promo times. However, you will almost certainly be downleveled to L6 even if you get L7 at Amazon. Personally, I'd go to Google now if you want to go there long term. Get those extra months in at Google L6 now, so the promo to L7 will be faster than joining at L6 later.
For ICs, Google's L6 is Amazon's L7. For management, is that the same? If so, aren't you already getting 'L7' in a way?
According to levels.fyi, that’s not true. Amazon L6 is same as G L6
So this means that Amazon L5 is Google L5?
390 to 520 is quite significant
L6 of Amazon is T5 of G. Your offer is already for T6 which is equivalent to L7 of Amazon. Take it.
99% chance you'll go from 7 to 6 at Google. I know of one Amazon Sr Director who came on as a 7.
G don’t give people 7 by comparing levels you will get at other places, Amazon included. I wouldn’t bet on getting 7 at Amazon and then hope that G will match that. G will down level you almost for certain, unless you absolutely killed it on interview m. Get in early, if you are a high potential performer, you already know how to get to next level. At G it will take more than just your own personal perf to move up. You will need to have some luck on the org, the product you are on, and the people you work with.
I agree about luck part. That’s with any large company.
It depends on what you’ve accomplished at L7 at Amazon. If you are a newly minted L7, you can bank on getting downlevelled. Also Amazon L6 is a wide band & does not always equate to G L5.

I would wait the few months and take the promotion, and then use it as leverage while negotiating.
Do you know how long is Google offer valid? I heard some place that it will be good for an year?
1 year as they say but your recruiter will be your best bet.
