Amazon vs Microsoft

I have offers from Alexa skills team (tc 160k+) and Microsoft cloud services (150k+).
Which option is better for new grad to relaunch the career (have 2+ years of work experience back in India)?

Have actually calculated the tc accurately. The 401k match, and other benefits, itself should bring the TCS much closer if not make msft higher.

Overall msft is a better place to work all things being equal.

Alexa skills team is a mess. I don’t think you’ll learn too much.

That said from just a money standpoint the MS offer is better. Benefits are worth way more than the gap in comp.

Try calculating the benefits. 5 days extra vacation, and infact it's practically unlimited as long as you get stuff done, which isn't very hard at msft.

Healthcare is far superior, and higher match for hsa, so put that in your tc.

Almost 5k extra 401k match. Add that too.

Better people, culture, wlb, I personally put a $value about 20k for that alone when I decided to move (not at msft any more).

Being a bachelor and non immigrant, I’m not concerned about family health plan and 401k match. Quite inclined towards cash component because of my student loan.

You do realize that the 401k match is free money that Microsoft is basically giving you, tax free. It's one thing to not have these as priority, but not to take the money that is just given out is dumb. Same with the hsa match - which infact works best for younger people who don't go to the doc often.

Bro when I started at Amazon I never cared about 401k and HSA benefits and only took Amazon offer because of the 50K signing bonus which helped me pay off my student loans at once.

After coming to Microsoft I think this is a better place to be. For a bad wlb I would rather be in a company that pays way more than Amazon.

It's better to learn the importance of HSA and 401k at an early stage. Now I max out the contribution for both but wish I did it earlier.

Amazon but I’m biased. Don’t listen to people counting the pennies difference. Look long term and see where you’ll want to be with the tech skills you’ll get. Build those core competencies, and become a thought leader. Then divest your skills in the next hot startup idea and become your own boss. Bam you’re THE guy who fucks.

Given where you are in your career trajectory I would pick Amazon. No other company gives you so much scope early on - it will be tough but I think the ride is worth it.

I’m from an Alexa org, and I actually quite like it. People in my org have all been super nice, wlb balance is great. I would recommend amazon as a good place to work as an SDE1, it seems like if you are able to grow you can make a lot of impact pretty early on in your career here. Microsoft seems great too, and benefits are better but I can’t imagine culture or wlb being much different. A lot of Microsoft employees on blind seem to think they are above Amazon, though from what I can tell the hiring bars are near identical, as are the total compensation packages. People tend to jump between those two companies quite frequently also so I see a lot of amazon employees that started at Microsoft

Manager was talking about providing framework core services to Alexa applications. What I understood , it’s about Alexa backend platform

Lol.. "Alexa backend platform"... That's next to no information.
Alexa skills kit team is a large org with multiple sub teams. Their common goal/vision is to create tools/platforms/services that can be used by 3p and 1p Alexa skills developers to create Alexa skills.

Go with Amazon and the higher TC

Both! Amazon is better for TC as usual, Microsoft is better for learning and early career trajectory... But! You've got to leave Microsoft after two or three promo because they always slow you down and are prejudiced against people who don't show them the finger (seriously they take you for granted). Then you cash in the big tc bump with Amazon. Yes it means you have to keep leet coding. If you don't want to, do Amazon first knowing that you will burn out and leave within two years but the interview at Microsoft is somewhat easier on the stupid leet uselessness.
