Amazon vs Startup offer for H1B visa holder

Accepted Amazon offer for SDE-3 last week with 280 TC

Got another offer from a decently growing startup(can’t mention the name as it’ll be easy to identify) this week with slightly better offer in terms of pay and position.

Work domain is similar, but not much idea about work culture or work life balance in either of the teams. Start up gives principal level position whereas Amazon offer is for Senior engineer. I’m currently L64 Senior at Microsoft with 10 YOE.

1) Which one will you pick in this case?
2) I’m on H1B visa and Amazon is currently collecting all docs to file H1B transfer. Will it be bad if I go with the start up now and reject Amazon offer at this point or after couple of weeks?

    Isn't $280k low-ball for SDE3?

Def lowball for an external offer. That’s the very bottom of SDE3 band.

Ya I think so too now. Accepted that offer without doing much research. Not sure if negotiating with Amazon would be a good idea now given that I accepted it already

Go with Amazon offer.Startup offer might be great on paper but you might not be able to encash it.

It varies a lot. Mine is probably on lower end with 220 TC. I think lot of new hires are getting pretty good offers these days

Thanks for the Info. You're right. Also, L62 top of the band is 205K. Similarly, the L6 SDE at Amazon has a range of 250K to 380K. Their initial offer number without negotiation is slightly above their median TCT pay. You can easily touch 300K in Seattle market.

SDE3 band is roughly 280 to 380. Weird that he got a bottom of band offer as an external hire.

My guess would be that OP did not do that well in the interview, and team really needed someone.

SDE3 is a very respectable role in Amazon so hopefully you can get a TT rating to fix TC in the future.

SDE3 band internally in Seattle starts around 250k. External offers can definitely be over 300k, but depends on the interview performance.
