Help me decide between two internship offers! VMware Role: NSBU Management Plane, mostly working on Big Data (and a little similar to my current role - message brokers) Pay: 8133/month + 4500 Relocation + To and fro flight and baggage Amazon Role: Consumer Organization Pay: 8500/month + 3500/month Relocation (pre tax, 1925 post tax) + To and fro flight Location: Palo Alto, 3 months. So, the pay and location is not an issue in either companies. Also, can anyone tell me - What work goes on in the Consumer Org team in the Palo Alto office at Amazon? That'd be really really helpful.
How is this even a question? Amazon of course
Because the pay is nearly the same and I know what I'm going to work on, at VMware. Help :P
Amazon at Palo Alto esp downtown with A9 is the most desirable. They have high TC and in a beautiful/prime location. They have smart folks and good wlb.
Both great companies - u can't go wrong. Congratulations! I voted for Amazon per one of the comments above (brand recognition), but I think VMware has a better culture and would probably be more enjoyable. Both will give great experience in big data, but AWS big data will just sound better.
Aws has an office in palo alto. So it's probably aws.
How has your experience at vmware? Which BU?
I have interned at both places and I have noticed some stark differences between the two. At AWS - The quality of work is amazing. You would be working on some cutting edge technology. However, AWS has some of the dirtiest politics I have seen. If your mentor doesn't like you, your internship will be ruined. Also, you will be expected to learn fast without much help and deliver faster. You will receive an offer only if both the manager and mentor are able to convince the bar raiser( a neutral 3rd party) that you deserve the offer. At VMware - The quality of work is great at NSBU, but I feel AWS is slightly better in terms of work. However, the intern experience at VMware is a delight. There are minimal politics, at least within NSBU. But one of the downside of VMware internship is that even if you meet all the expectations, you may not receive an offer if the team that you interned at is not hiring. But, you may still receive an interview for the propel program. Also, an advice - during internship don't be bothered by the money. Think about the work that you'll be doing and the experience that you'll get.
Thanks a lot for the detailed response. I'm not bothered by the money aspect for the internship at all, as I said and they're paying nearly the same anyway. The only problem I have now is that I don't know my team or work at Amazon.
Off topic but you can take your amazon offer to your VMware recruiter to tell them to match it.
Haha the pay isn't that different and it's an internship after all :)
For learning Microservices + 1st class web tools, Amazon is a no brainer, because VMware still is an Enterprise company, so wouldn't be cutting edge. It depends whether you like the domain or not. Someone interested in virtualization should obviously take VMW.
I don't have any work ex, except one internship. I don't have any particular interest in virtualization but I don't know my team in Amazon either :(
Whichever team it is, they're mostly doing Web backend, and that's the best place to learn best practices. Plus, for return offers, Amazon stock will be WAY higher than VMware grant, even joining bonus I think. Also, as others said, Amazon on resume will get you more calls later.
Amazon has more name brand recognition. After I interned and worked at Amazon I had no problem getting interviews at other companies. That being said VMware isn't bad either.
Pick Amazon, you will learn first class microservice architect, the skills you get in Amazon are going to benefit you for years. I miss all the good internal tools in Amazon, only when I started work for VMware I knew that are so good. Also, Amazon pays handsomely for return offer.
Thanks both for the input. My only concern is that I don't know what I'll be working on, at Amazon. Do you know what the consumer organization does?
