So while I humble brag a little, let me tell you about this (awesome) problem that I have. Edit: I have 7 YOE as a design verification (HW) engineer. I recently signed an offer with Amazon to be an SDE 1 and working on ads. They said I'd be doing stuff like working on mockups/MVPs of Android apps and web portal stuff. The breakdown is this: SDE 1 Base: 160K Sign on Bonus: 26k the first year, 18k second RSUs: 35 shares (vesting 5/15/40/40) This is beyond my expectations in both comp and work subject matter. I'm a little scared by their reputation... I'm leaving my current job because I feel out of place, unappreciated, and a cog in the machine. Amazon's frugality and the whole PIP thing is making me worried that it'll feel the same as working for Intel but with higher comp. I had an on-site with Verily last week, thinking I would just use the interview for practice but I came away from the experience with a super positive impression. The amenities are like Google's, and all my interviewers were the most friendly and chill people I've met so far. The projects they described sound as creative and interesting if not more than Amazon's and their comp breakdown is comparable and actually a little higher in beginning. L3 Base: 142k Sign on: 0 Perf bonus: 15% of base (~21k) if meets exp. RSUs: 94k (vesting 50% then monthly the second year) Some additional notes for Verily: Google will buy back the stock, so it's more liquid than other startups. Also I heard that you can switch to Google easily, but that sounds like heresay to me. Would love confirmation on this. What would you choose? I'm leaning towards reneging from Amazon... Getting blacklisted from such a huge FAANG company is going to hurt though. I will be thinking long and hard about this for the next week or so...
How are refreshers like at Verily? If they aren't good enough to keep up the TC, you will reach TC cliff in 2 years.
Shit! I forgot to ask... Im supposed to talk to the recruiter tomorrow.
That will make a difference. Compare projected TC for next 4 years. Also, you will be blacklisted only if you accept the offer and then reject. So, that shouldn't be your concern if you choose Verily now.
Verily. First commercial product is coming online soon. They'll either blow up or not soon. Roll the dice, ads will always be available. Nothing beats real physical products on your resume.
Which product is that?
Verily is cool place for healthcare but not software engineer. SDE is just support role, not to mention healthcare is still kind of research-oriented, far from commercialization. Anyway healthcare is bad domain compared to driving or finance. But Amazon is shitty place that treats you worse than dog. So Verily plz, at least you’ll be treated well though not exciting.
Could you please elaborate on the cons of SDE being a support role? Compared to places where SDEs are the main product I guess? I don't really have a good intuition of this stuff yet...
Also you can’t easily switch to Google. But essentially you are googler already
What's the hard route to move to Google from a bet like verily ?
I got off the phone with Amazon, they were surprisingly good natured about the whole thing. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their insights and contributions. I tried to take as much as possible into consideration and I think it really influenced my decision. Thanks!!
