I recently got an offer with AWS for L4 . I have 5 years of work experience. I feel a little disappointed with this offer , as I was expecting L5. Recruiter is saying position cant be changed this decision taken by the team and mostly it would be based on system design interview. I have offer with Wayfair with TC 180k, Amazon numbers are not yet confirmed. People from Amazon and Wayfair please provide your inputs would it be wise to go with the brand with level down ?
The answer very much depends on what team at Wayfair, if you know
Hands down amazon !
Amazon. Wayfair is the worst. Join only if you want to be PMs and L5 puppet
Wayfair is not a tech company, neither is Amazon. But both of them have tech divisions, so unless you provide what vertical you are in, it's hard to say. Being a techie at Wayfair, I can confirm that the culture is messed up. Nobody cares how good your code or your model (machine learning) is. Nobody is even willing to do the very basic "rubber ducking". Everyone is in a rat race to achieve targets. Managers often take credit of their subordinate's work and L1s (people with MS degress) hardly get to speak their minds in meetings. Most of the times it's expected that they go with the flow and say yes wherever "required". But as a result, L4s and L5s thrive. You'll find most of the PhDs - people who have studied and grinded their ass for 8-10 years in academia and who actually know some shit - will be sitting at L2s and L3s and will be hardly promoted. So you are gonna have a time of your life at Wayfair.
Amazon. Wayfair only L5+
Come to wayfair. I think you’ll have a bigger impact.
So, here is the thing. Wayfair has very recently recognized the fact that they want to be a tech company, which obviously means that their current tech is sub-par in some cases, and altogether shitty in others. That being said, it's not necessarily a bad thing, because this gives a lot of room for improvement and application of what you would have already learnt in your previous experience. If you come up with some good ideas and contribute to these pivoting changes, there is a lot of visibility and promotion opportunities in there. Amazon might be more set in their existing ways of doing things. You should negotiate more though, 180K is on the lower side of L4 at Wayfair, from what I know.
I think 180k is top of band for base for L4. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. Now for TC you should be somewhere around ~230-240k if I recall correctly. Possibly more? Again, someone feel free to correct me. But yes, we have some catching up to do, and have so many interesting challenges at the moment. There’s certainly a lot of room to rise here if you’re truly good at what you do.
I think OP said 180K TC. That's pretty low according to me.
Wayfair is pretty fly IMO. Don’t listen to the haters.
