Amazon’s Management Problem

I love Amazon and the internal mobility opportunities are real. I’ve had no career development issues or trouble with managers. BUT I just really have to point out that Amazon STILL has management problems. There are still toxic managers or incompetent ones leaving you wondering how they ended up being L6/L7 leaders 🤯 I swear the leadership principles get diluted as you go up the vertical....

Is it that bad? I feel like you'll get this anywhere? My onsite interview is Thursday so hopefully I do well.

It would be better if they cut out the forced curve bullshit. That pretty much guarantees assholes will rise.

Amazon raday Apr 16, 2018

Actually we did cut it out and things got a lot worse, so we brought it back. We were going to turn into Microsoft.

Microsoft JoanHarris Apr 16, 2018

You have already turned into Microsoft as that is exactly what they did. Why is it that people think it is actually beneficial despite zero evidence? (And no, your belief that it made a difference doesn’t count). Instead you are doing the typical thing based on only your biased view. And settling for the same bs solution that Ge and Microsoft did before you? Doesn’t sound very Amazonian to me.

I wish there was a way to provide constructive feedback so they are aware (professionally), but remain anonymous for those that have bosses who are fragile or belong in a small team and can get outed real quick. Connections need to ask better questions. Somehow my manager is an L7 and literally the most incompetent manager ever. She gets wowed by the easiest/dumbest things like basic functions on a spreadsheet, learning how filters work, etc. She also brought on a colleague (her bestie) who is equally incompetent and is loathed, which brings a negative reputation to our team and makes it hard to collaborate with other business groups and get buy in. They think our team is useless and the ones that are good are grouped with them. This makes our team stay within our bubble which doesn’t help.

My roommate was part of a very similar group. Leave before they make you like themselves, or worse, chew and throw you out in toxic politicking because when people can't grow through talent, they play politics to win.
