Amazon's new HQ

Amazon is looking for a 2nd huge HQ location. Cities and states will be tripping over themselves to offer the tax breaks, but where do you think they'll end up and why? http://www.seattletimes.com/business/amazon/amazon-plans-to-build-second-equal-headquarters-outside-seattle/

Many cities in your list can be eliminated as it clearly mentioned city should be powerhouse for talent. Strategically it may be bay area but land itself in south bay may cost several billions itself and there is not much either.

Microsoft yMcg47 Sep 7, 2017

Probably not sf bay area. They already have a sizable presence there. I think they're looking for a deal with a city, so not likely that will happen in the Bay Area

Goldman Sachs 1Beaky OP Sep 7, 2017

Agree. The fact the bay area is pulling ahead in this poll displays "my city" bias. There's no way this is going to the bay.

Amazon fishtaco Sep 7, 2017

If amazon wanted to stay in just the US, they would not explicitly state north America. Vancouver and Toronto should be on that list.

Goldman Sachs 1Beaky OP Sep 7, 2017

Definitely agree in hindsite. Can't change a poll though.

Facebook Kjuyhgg Sep 7, 2017

Vancouver seems like a good choice. Short flight to Seattle and good place to put employees who can't get a H1B.

Why not Bellevue?

Amazon FBA123 Sep 7, 2017

Exactly or just north or south seattle. That's along a light rail route. There's plenty of cheap space in south seattle that's affordable for business space and residential for workers

It's going to be Phoenix. They've secured a bunch of land out here in the Tempe area. They also already have a decently sized office of engineers in Tempe and are expanding significantly.

FastSpring MortyPythn Sep 7, 2017

Worked in Tempe Amazon for 4 years - I doubt they will have it in Pacific time zone - I'm certain it will be Detroit or Chicago - those cities dearly need large company presence to pull them out of their funk after last 2 decades of pain. Not complaining since I stay in AZ that would mean more jobs here and need to buy up real estate fast.

Carvana cFaS24 Sep 7, 2017

Everything I've heard from friends and buddies who are on the zoning board is that there have been informal talks about Amazon building more stuff here. The main draw is the various logistics centers located here. Been some chatter about Amazon wanting to increase their AZ presence significantly so it'll be interesting if they just expanding another 5-10k employees but not an Hq

I bet it's going to be either NYC/LA/Chicago. While tech talent isn't in any of these cities with the same density you find in SF/Seattle, tons of people want to live in these places simply because these are places the largest numbers of educated Americans are from.

Oracle grPh46 Sep 7, 2017

Chicago has a ton of tech talent

Snapchat Dtbz76 Sep 7, 2017

So does NYC and LA, just the density isn't there in the way it is in the bay and Seattle.

NerdWallet hdhsjcnsjc Sep 7, 2017

Toronto would be a great option

Salesforce Treefiddy1 Sep 7, 2017

They should move east in Washington across the mountains all the way to Spokane.

Amazon gdrt Sep 7, 2017

No international airport in eastern Washington

Salesforce Treefiddy1 Sep 7, 2017

Good point!

Oracle ClouDev Sep 7, 2017

It has to be somewhere in the Midwest for cost of living, tax credit, and strategic location for future warehousing/shipping expansion (in addition to the HQ).

Northwestern Mutual mike34blah Sep 7, 2017

Like I said in another post...Milwaukee...the state is definitely looking to bring in more tech companies (Foxconn for one) and Amazon already has a HUGE warehouse here...

Amazon gxddbov Sep 9, 2017

Detroit or Minneapolis.

Expedia whtever Sep 7, 2017

I think Denver/Boulder area meets most of what they are looking for.

Salesforce rm -rf / Sep 7, 2017

Minneapolis or Indianapolis. Relatively cheap, large, universities nearby, presence of other tech companies to poach employees from.
