I was told that I’m not technical enough and that I’m better suited for leadership. I don’t get it because I answered all of their questions. I even (very politely) corrected one of the interviewers (and the other interviewer cosigned) at some point with a technical explanation. I’m pretty insulted because I know I teched out, I have decent experience and it didn’t seem like my interviewers knew much of anything but documentation, so it seems like the bar is low (at least for their team), and I thought technical + leadership/communication skills as well as a clear trajectory towards leadership is a good thing. I have a Google on-site after passing two phone screens recently, and other opportunities are rolling in after phone screens and on-sites from some companies with tougher (than Amex) interviews. I’m genuinely confused and feel kinda bad. I’m not entitled to opportunities anywhere, but I don’t know what’s up. Any ideas? 5 YOE NYC
Does your race match job requirements?
Some folks don’t want to hear you talk about leadership when you’re applying for a tech role. They may see it as you’re “looking past” the tech position you’re applying for, and might even think you’re not technical enough. I always have my eye on the leadership ball and am prepared to answer those questions and briefly talk about aspirations in leadership, but I never bring it up myself. American Express isn’t the most admirable company in the world, so don’t take it too hard. Your next opportunity might just be better...
You all must understand that not every guy who interviews you is good enough to judge you . I have a kiddo in team with two years of work experience taking onsite interviews for people with more than 5-6 years of work experience. The only reason she is taking interviews is to get promoted. So just chuck it and move on . Don’t bother about it . All the best OP for google and other interviews 👍
You "teched" out?
Passed the technical aspect of the process... It’s an assumption, but I’m pretty sure. Are you about to shit on me, or what?
Join Chase or Marcus instead. Theyre gonna win.

I’ve about had it with bullshit, contradictory, and otherwise head-scratchingly left field interview feedback.
First I have too much academic experience. Then not enough. Then too much SWE experience. Then not enough. Etc. etc.
Same here. I actually never want to consider American Express again at this point.
