I’ll be heading to Mumbai and will be in the area around the US Embassy and the American School of Bombay.

First time in India. Any advice from my fellow techies? I’ve lived overseas for years but it’ll be my first time in India.

Drink bottled water only, have vitamin C everyday (and this is key) - it will keep you in better shape, keep your passport safe, carry cash (Indian rupees) on you at all times, please look on both sides before you cross (and remember it's the other side) and there is no right of way, when in doubt go for hot food over cold (like pasta/ biryani over a deli sandwich), avoid street food initially (although that's the best part), ease into the spice, try and get a hang of daily expenses and keep a track so you don't get cheated, lots of cool bars so enjoy that, travel the nation when possible, it ll be worth it. Mumbai is not a small city by any means with insane traffic, I'd factor that in your travels. People are very fond of foreigners (yes that's what you will be). Do not venture on trains unless you are 150% sure, no on second thoughts don't, let's give it a few months. Avoid driving, not worth it. Uber is your new best friend! Learn the rules of cricket, it's a religion. Expect rains in monsoon like nothing you've ever seen before, so buy an umbrella in Mumbai, summers are hot, very hot, and winter non existent. Enjoy alphanso mangoes in summers, it's one of the best fruits you've ever had before. No need to tip 20%, you'll get the hang of it. Avoid beef or looking for it, political controversy around it, best if you stick to other meats, poultry, and fish. When in doubt, ask us more here :)

Good luck. It's a city faster than NYC (not joking, I ve lived long term at both) and let it grow on you.

Second this. Lived in Mumbai for 3 years. The rains here are like nothing I've ever seen. Practically a flood every time, and my arsehole manager would ask me to come to office anyway.
Go easy on the street food till you build immunity.
Radio/app cabs are your best friends. Avoid busses, 3 wheeler rickshaw and local trains at peak times.
Buy some books to pass time in the cab, it's gonna be a long ride.
Lastly , enjoy the night life.

Water , and ease yourself in to it. Let your body slowly acclimate to local weather and hygiene. Mumbai is awesome and Indians love whites.

Because any one else won't ask that question. It's a white question.

Hey OP, here are some tips:
Try to create a social circle , life gets too boring without friends. One way is to join a gym or a good health club.
Try to live either near the consulate or in south mumbai / warli/ pedder road area. They are probably best places from commute standpoint.
If you can afford they try to hire a chauffeur. But it is quite expensive. I was recently in Mumbai and I confess I could not drive in that traffic.
Try to find a good grocery store (they call them supermarkets ) or make sure a good one is near.
Lastly buy a ton of cotton attire.
    Good luck

+1 on the cotton attire. Love the shirts I picked up out there

Just have common sense, most of what you need to learn you’ll pick up in the first week or so by wandering around. Basic rule for anywhere is you don’t owe anyone anything and you’re not obliged to help or chat with anyone random who approaches you. Assert yourself, haggle, don’t be so deferential. Most Americans I see abroad are like afraid to assert themselves in situations and are total push overs by locals looking to take a few extra bucks off of travelers just hoping to avoid any offense or slight confrontation. I spent a couple weeks in Mumbai and loved it. Went all over and most of it alone. Rode the trains, rickshaws, walked around and met locals and enjoyed my time.
