With Amazon adding 25,000 jobs to DC. What will the total compensation look like for that area? Will it be similar to Seattle?

Majority of NOVA tech jobs relate to government contracts. TC is $100k to up to $250k with experience typically. Amazon will for sure be a top dog and steal all the talent. Will be interesting to what it does to Lockheed, Northrup, Raytheon. They are going to need to get a lot more competitive...

Govt contracting pays a lot to do a small amount of work over a long period of time. Amazon will not convince those people to leave their comfy jobs.

Tech companies in the area need to compete, and it looks like Amazon is starting out in 2019 at average salary of $150k and adjusting for inflation over time.

That 150 was the average, which should put CS educated well above that to make up for the other less highly paid roles

    • Do you NG folks still have a pension? While Amazon will poach other talent it won’t likely be the other way around. Most big employers in DC do government work. That means security clearance and no H1B.

Nah, no pension anymore. It's about as average of an employer as you could imagine. Okay pay for the area but good wlb and high job security. The problems can be interesting if you're into aerospace instead of infiltrating the minds of consumers.

    • Yep. Agree on both points. I still have a frozen pension from my aerospace days, which I intend to fully milk.

And let’s not forget that NoVA has Americas richest counties by household income. I don’t think TC average will drop.

A lot of wealth, buts due to a lot of dual income and mostly old school money like big law, medicine.

Doubt it'll compete with Seattle. Probably will be Boston/Chicago tier. Not like anybody in the area has much of any other option.

Any reference to what the TC for Boston/Chicago is?

For new grads only SF & NY are premium markets, the rest are all paid the same whether it's Seattle or Colorado or Boston so I'd expect Virginia to be on par with Seattle

@enge374: Not true for only premium for new grads. There is base adjustment when moving between these and the base threshold is 185 versus 160, which is really not applicable to new grads.

It will be the same as Seattle. Amazon has discount, standard, and premium market tiers in the US. Almost everything that’s a major city is Standard market, including Seattle, despite it having a high cost of living. NYC is a premium market, Bay Area is a premium market. I don’t know what big city is a discount market, not sure if I can find out... Chicago and Boston are assuredly not, maybe Detroit?

Even with discount pay you’d feel rich in Detroit since lots of homes can be bought for < $100...that’s right, $100...not to be confused with $100k...literally $100 😂
