Anxiety during interview process

I get a lot of anxiety during the interview process. especially when waiting on phone/onsite results/Hiring commetie decisions etc.

I end up checking my emails every 5mins, sending a follow-up note to recruiter every other day.

i am not able to sleep/exercise properly, i keep thinking of scenarios : what will I do if I get the offer, what if I dont etc

I work in supply chain/logistics. The number of job opportunities are significantly lower than SWE.

any tips that can help

@holiday linkedIn, contacts, portals, recruiters all in parallel, daily and aggressively. I used to have a timetable to apply from 8am to 9am for atleast n companies for nearly 2 months.
“..the hell..”: you can safely believe i have cooked that up/lied for that Utopian trophy i would get on doing so. Also pls reread, i didnt claim i attended 26 companies, specifically said same company, different teams for some interviews, (for more than 3 companies). Good luck.

    Do Yoga!

Hiring committee decisions, recruiter responses are out of your hands. It’s wise to invest time in preparing for the next interview. Yoga helps calming mind and body.

      I try to do that.

The thing is unlike SWE my field does not have a lot of good companies to work for and I don’t have interviews lined up.

Wouldn’t these drugs be dangerous for the background check if they require you for a blood test? You may get an offer, but may not be to hired 😂

CBD does not cause anyone to fail drug test, THC does.

Have you considered seeing a psychotherapist? A good one can help you predict when your anxiety is rising and take steps to mitigate it and learn to cope and manage in a healthful manner. One thing that helped me was giving up caffeine, learning the body sensations that accompany anxiety and learning to do distracting things such as walking or even thinking ‘well what will I do if it works out in my favor’.

Also, anxiety and excitedness feel similar in the body so that can also throw people off. Slowly, gradually, you might be able to address it and any underlying imposter syndrome type feelings that could be pressing it into overdrive. I wish you luck!

You need to speak to a qualified doctor to get help for your underlying anxiety. They may refer you for cognitive behavior therapy to help you change the way you handle the entire process.

Get practice by interviewing to companies that you don’t really want to work at.

Not caring about the outcome => no anxiety.

Experience doing something with no anxiety => less anxiety in future.

First understand that it is not uncommon. That relieves you of some stress. Then understand why this stress. Might be because you put a lot more weight to it. This is the reason I suggest people to interview when they are not actually in desperate need of a move.

Here’s a technique I used successfully while I was waiting for an offer. I heard from the recruiter weekly over a month and a half before an offer was forthcoming. On one call, she asked if I had any questions. I asked if I could have a second conversation with one of my interviewers. In doing so, I illustrated that I was serious about joining and wanted to learn more. More importantly, I put the ball in their court and made them do some actions. This also sparked the question from the recruiter about whether the follow up should be before or after the offer. I ignored that question but they got my point.

Here are a few suggestions - the idea is not to fool yourself but reach a point where you accept these are truths:
    1) it is just a job at the end of the day - you don’t know what will be the new manager like - or new team like - you may even hate the work or company - you are also taking a chance and evaluating - your happiness shouldn’t be so tied to a positive outcome from the interviews
    2) interviews are imperfect - a bad outcome doesn’t suggest that you won’t make an excellent employee - someone who is a much worse employee than you may judge you unfit and a better employee may judge you positively
    3) likability is a big factor - if an interviewer likes you - while filing review he will focus on things he liked and still recommend - reverse happens when he doesn’t like you. Constantly try to engage with the interviewer in a positive way - even during the interview showcase that you try and learn and are coachable - that’s much more important than knowing how to solve a specific problem.

Meditate and internalize the essence of mindfulness, Yogic wisdom, Tao - flow etc. Outcome in anything and under any situational details is not in your hand. Living in future or past causes anxiety. There is no fear or anxiety in the present, only action or action of non-action.

THC is great for anxiety but remember that it's not legal at the federal level. If you have or will have security clearances then best avoid it.

It can also affect your memory if you use it a lot over a long period of time.

    Exercise is great too.

Have you thought about speaking with a doctor? Counseling could be a great help, especially when paired with a medication for anxiety. Most people tolerate SSRI medications like Zoloft, Lexapro, etc, very well. They do wonders for anxiety.

There's no reason to be miserable my friend 🙂. I wish you the best.

Edit: I brought up counseling and medication because. If you're this anxious over the interview process then I'm guessing you struggle with general anxiety disorder. Millions of people do, including my wife and I. She takes Zoloft and I take Lexapro. The meds really do work, especially when combined with counseling.

      Fuck lexapro.

I have a gene that causes me to get suicidal thoughts whilst taking lexapro.

While taking lexapro was the only time I ever got them.

      Soooo don't take Lexapro then?

That's a very rare side effect and I'm truly sorry you experienced it. That doesn't mean others shouldn't try it though.
