Any DBA’s here?

How are you transforming yourself with the changes? Hearing no more traditional dba roles and Devops/SRE’s taking over the tasks. Did you move away from database administration to data engineers or SRE’s?

Not a DBA but I don’t think the need for Oracle specialists will ever go away. As for MySQL/Postgres sure devops/SRE can take those over

Maybe not in the next 7-8 years but when autonomous database technology matures, we would need much less database specialists. Check out CMU’s Peleton project. I’m very excited about the possibilities.

True, there is no need for Oracle experts anymore.. at least not with the amount to people.. I saw a bunch of teams with 10-20 supporting just oracle. I suppose they will be cut short to probably 5 or even less with cloud mobility.

Oracle is easy to learn. So is plsql .. not a bright outlook since new companies try to avoid them and their costs

It’s all about sticking up with the current techs and being good at what you do. MySQL and Oracle still have a major place in a lot of companies. A number of others are moving to stuff like Cassandra and other no sql solutions

This is true it’s just hard to get experience with the new systems with large amounts of data not every company has it or has a use case for not shitting it into a standard RDBMS
