YoE: 0 TC: $0 Will it be hard for an Asian/Chinese dude to find a coding/tech job in the Boston area? Will be working under OPT, have STEM Phd from top college in the Cambridge area. Started LC 50 easys so far. Browsed company team photos and spotted few asian males. This got me wondering.

Is it cheaper to eat chipotle everyday than buy groceries ?
Interview at companies in Seattle area and Bay. There are many Chinese in this area. I don’t think Americans in this region will discriminate Chinese in hiring. However, there are also other immigrants who prefer hiring the engineers from the same country. So you should expect some failures unless you are good enough to overcome such bias. There are smaller number of Americans than immigrants on these two areas.
how do you define "discrimination"?
Maybe like taking off points for being one? My friend and I noticed that there aren’t common in tech company group photos
Only broke ones
Oh no
Generally no, you won’t be discriminated. For start ups, they might not consider you since you need an H1B to stay long term. If you have a shitty interviewer that’s another story.
You won’t be discriminated but a lot of foreigners, not only Asians, lack communicating skills or bad English(not accent, accent doesn’t matter) and this might be the reason they fail the interviews. Interviews aren’t just spitting out code but also communication.
When the job description for an entry level SWE states excellent communication skills, how good do they expect the candidate to be?
that you have no trouble explaining what you are working on and you dont sound like a complete idiot. Asians have no trouble finding jobs, there's absolutely no discrimination. Only discrimination you will face will be due to your lack of tech and soft skills.
None in my experience. None in Boston or anywhere in USA tech companies.
Yes if you are trying to get into cutting edge research in like nuclear tech, chip design etc .. any sensitive topics that require security clearance . Too many chinese people have stolen Us tech unfortunately.
No, this is the stupidest idea ever considering there's so many Asians/Chinese coders in the Boston scene. There is an overrepresentation of Asian/Chinese male coders in every place I've ever worked at. Unfortunately, there's probably underrepresentation in leadership positions due to language or in smaller startups due to immigration issues.
1. Do you have coding skills beyond LC? 2. Do you have citizenship/green card or do you need visa sponsorship? 3. Do you have good English language skills? Preferably without a heavy accent? If you answered yes to all three, you’ll have no problem. Lots of jobs out there and not enough people for them. Even bigots can’t afford to discriminate these days.
