Any GCP / AWS cloud consultants here?

The other day, someone told me there were opportunities for AWS freelancer / consultants to work on interesting problems at startups and high tier non tech companies and make > $1k a day. Does anyone have experience with this? How does one get in this game?

1k a day isn’t even that good. Bloomberg pays this all the time

I’m not trying to maximize TC here. Just wondering how people transitioned from FTE to consulting on cloud platforms and whether it’s easy to get in, and struggle to get a good network going.

My opinion is that full time is almost always better. I rarely see contracts paying much more than fte, often times they pay less. But I’m not an expert, it’s something I looked into and couldn’t find good leads

Seems those on this app are dominated by employee mindset. That could be good or bad depending on your situation. If you’re 28 and trying to FIRE out by 40, it may be a good thing. For those of us in middle age who have been laid off a few times, we are looking for other ways to make a living. Your outlook depends on which business cycles you’ve lived through.

I’m also thinking of the same thing OP. Hoping it’s a better way to survive the next decade.

@oracle: I’m not so sure anymore. When I was younger, I thought the key was to create a startup, and I began acquiring the tools (cloud knowledge) to do so. But given the ever increasing TC at big CO’s, the opportunity cost for working on your own startup gets bigger and bigger. Societal pressure means that unless you are an extreme believer in your startup idea, you’ll have to get a job like everyone else on this app. Consulting seems to be a good third option but I know that it won’t beat FAANG TC.

I am currently a AWS/GCP consultant and planning to move to become FTE. Coz as consultant u dont get to own a feature/idea/product and always have to be on toes to be the best. I did consulting for 1.5 yrs. Hopefully going to be a FTE is a right move.

So you’re looking for stability then? I guess that makes sense if you find a rest and vest type of situation at a FANG or tier 1/2 company.

Yea more stability, but I don't think i am strong on algos/DS for FAANG level. They still need those for cloud positions

Right on. What’s your YOE? I’m 4 years in now, and been working on certs on the side. My choices are I could LC to get a generic FAANG job that might silo my experience to their stack, or consult and grow my cloud experience (which I would like to)

But can you work remote with FAANG, take a 2 month break when you feel like it, and most of all, be no slave of golden handcuffs?

    • But u won’t consistently make 1k per day , you need a big network to get there

Everything is a trade off, yes. I’m wondering if anyone on blind has done it though.
