Is there a better place than the U.S. for working as a software development engineer, or related fields? As the kids are approaching elementary school age, I'm getting more concerned about the school shootings and the whole gun freedom in the U.S., and so I'm thinking about moving to a different country. Also, I'm sick of the doctors and the medical system here, as every single time I took the kids to the doctor for a problem, they never gave me anything more than my 5 minutes Google search (and no, that didn't help my kids' situation at all). I lived in 3 states (including WA and CA) and I love the tech community in WA and CA. I love my job, and the projects are really exciting. People are very understanding and open minded and welcoming, so if it was only me without the kids, I would have definitely stayed in the U.S., but with the kids I don't know. I'm concerned that outside of the U.S. I can't find a better job opportunity (or as good as what I have here in this community), with all this excitement. So any thoughts?
Dude your kids are not gonna die in a mass shooting. Donât leave the country because of that
Too much freedom here. Going back.
I would be worried more about getting into a car accident than a school shooting. Try a Catholic school, they are gated and locked during school times. Switch doctors.
May as well just keep children in a kennel and only let them see daylight after a proper human sacrifice
That's another thing. Switzerland/Singapore you can get by with public transport and we actually test people before letting them drive by themselves. In the UK you typically have like 20 hours of driving instruction then a quite stringent test. I heard in some places (Cali) you just like drive for 5-10 mins... don't crash and you passed
Switzerland. Ranks top 3 of most quality of life rankings and salaries like bay area with lower taxes. Shit weather vs California though
Thanks for the info. Will look into Switzerland.
Switzerland is beautiful. Google has a big office in Zurich.
Wtf you clearly watch too much mainstream news. Do you seriously believe everything everyone tells you? Nobody is going to die in a mass shooting. God try to think with your own brain based on your own experiences and stop listening to a bunch of neo liberal bullshit
I actually don't watch news at all (until something big happens like a mass shooting). But I lived outside of the U.S. and what I'm talking about is based on what I've seen and experienced, not media. The medical system here is a joke, and same as the early education (I mean just comparing the math I learned during middle and high school with what they're teaching kids here in the U.S. at even private high schools). The quality of life for kids (before getting into the career life) is much lower than European countries. But again the tech jobs here are really good.
The US exports both technology and higher education, whereas whatever cloaca you came from exports you. Maybe education isnât a problem?
Canada??
I lived there for 3 months (before having kids, so I don't know). Do you have any data about the jobs there?
Amazon, Google, Facebook, tons of new start ups, fintech. You should be fine. Of course pay is not as high as US but job security, free health and great quality of life. Canadians are super polite :) No guns and schools are good too.
Switzerland -high pay and awesome life but you can never integrate to the level you can in the US.Your kids will most likely be fine . Germany-Lesser pay but heck a lot of opportunities .I would strongly look into Germany but you will have to learn German for managerial opportunities . Singapore - Saw on some threads Grab offers as much as 230k USD. Honestly these are the only options for decent pay and decent opportunities . You will have to make trade offs like learning a new language ,lower pay.Just transfer internally to Germany/Netherlands/Switzerland
Thank you for the info. Learning a new language wouldn't be a problem at all. I already speak 3, so that trade off is minimal. I'll look into these options.
FYI -amazon has lots of roles in Luxembourg which probably is an awesome option as well
What about Singapore? Looks like the pay is very good. Not sure about cost of living and population density
Trade offs man, trade offs. Us tech sector is great pay and great projects, with ok quality of life. Europe sucks and low pay, but good quality if you like the model. Latin America... nah. Itâs all about management and outsourcing. Not sure about Asia nor Africa nor Australia. But I know a few happy aussies here in the Us that want to move back after their kids go to high school in the us... so thatâs telling
