What's your favorite? Single malt only.

Looking for some good recommendations (under $250).

PS: do not reply with any Glens, Lagavulin, Mcallan

If you want a really good malt, try some Japanese stuff - for example Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt.

The japs do it best. Try for yourself and you'll understand.

Lol. Yeah, people don't seem to get that scotch is from freaking Scotland. How hard can it be??

OP asked for a good single malt but no Lagavulin or Macallan.

That's like asking for bacon without the fat, hence why I suggested he OP should try a jap malt.

It's better than most of the recommendations here, and cheaper too.

Btw, I'm half Irish/Scottish. I own land in Islay. Approx 30 bottles of scotch in my home atm.
I stand by my words. If you want a good malt, drink jap.

Mr Taketsuru himself studied the distillation process in Scotland.

The Japs took what the Scots invented and improved it. Just like they do with many inventions or creations.

It is what it is, but the bottom line is it's still bacon.

@ginkooB would you mind recommending a few Japanese whiskeys and perhaps also sake if you know any?

I really like hot sake, the only brand I remember is the Murai Family Nigori Genshu. For both whiskey and sake my ex used to have it at home and I loved the stuff he served. But I never bothered learning what the drinks were - I regret that now ;)

Price range preferably around $50 - $100 since I recently resigned from my job :) But I'd also love to know the higher end stuff for when I get my economy back on track!

What's the point of asking this question then saying no replies like Legavulin?

Lagavulin 16 is a better single malt than pretty much anything you'll find under $250 if you like scotch with complex flavors.

Anyways, balvenie is a good distillery if you like smokey flavors.

      This.

If you like Lagavulin I can also recommend Ardbeg. Ledaig is pretty solid too. Aberlour if on a budget.

This Single Malt snobbery is ridiculous.

Imagine if someone insisted on single spice cooking, or single instrument music.

There is nothing wrong with blended whiskey in general. It adds consistency of flavor YoY. However, the uniqueness of single-malt whiskey is intriguing as well -- particularly when you start talking about cask-strength single barrels. In the bourbon world, I can taste the difference between two bottles of 4-roses single barrel. They are sublte but pleasantly different. No snobbery on my part, but I do generally enjoy single malts more than blended.

      Balinoff vodka is the best.

You can drink it straight or mix it with anything.

It mixes so well that I’m shocked people buy roofies to put in people’s drinks - you can’t even tell it’s there.

Like I’ve had my gf get mad at me for not giving her any alcohol in her mixed drink. Only for her to notice when it hits.

Put vodka in deep freeze for 3 hrs (alcohol doesn't freeze).
Drink it straight. Thank me later.

Still not a fan of vodka.
It's a great way to drink sugar (with juice etc), I'm not a fan of calories.

At that price point, your best bet is probably something like the Aberlour A'bunadh or even the 16 y/o. Aberlour is a rising, but yet underpriced scotch atm. Strike while the iron is hot.

    Aberlour A'bunadh - ~$100
Clynelish (any) - Price varies depending on what you are after. So many good ones here.
    Auchentoshan 21 - ~$200
    Highland Park 18 - ~$150
    BenRiach 20 - ~$220
Dalmore King Alexander III - ~$250
    Balvenie 21 Portwood - $200

There are a lot more I'd recommend, but these are some that sort of pop in my mind.

*Prices are as I remember them. They may vary depending on where you get them.
