Are there any not-so-well-known perks of working at Google/FB/Netflix?

Not including free food or free bus shuttles.

At Google they give you $12K to spend towards any kind of lessons that you might be interested in such as flying lessons, cooking lessons etc.

I think they've merged recently. I've been learning Scala recently and o Reilly has a good collection. But it's like $10 a month if you pay for it. Not a huge "perk".

I actually called the Employee Assistance Program earlier this year after my performance problems were raised. When the operator answered, I quickly launched into why I was calling. After telling her of my struggle, she curtly said “hold please, I’ll transfer you to a counselor”. And I was fucking disconnected. !! No joke. I know it’s a third party service, but once again Amazon has zero investment in the employee experience. Even the EAP company hates us, and likely makes little money. I didn’t even bother to call back.

Large sum in a short period doesn’t make sense. The spouse already gets all the unvested stock plus the life insurance money. So the best use of the salary is to spread it over time.

We get $500/quarter to spend on the airbnb app however we want. The money rolls over indefinitely so some people take some baller vacations after a couple years.
We also get custom airbnb branded backpacks when we join (looking at you Google) and they pay for our cell phones.

We also get great 401k matching. 50% match up to 6% of base salary. $150/month lyft credit + $100/month to use on parking or bart/bus. We also get Mega backdoor Roth up to $55k post tax per year.

Free breakfast/lunch/dinner every day. Dinner only served Monday thru Thursday but starts at 6pm. 20 beers/wines on tap. Tons of fancy house made drinks, coffee and snacks. kombucha on tap.

Full office shutdown for 2 weeks during xmas/new years + 15 days of pto + 2 float holidays that you can take whenever.

We also get access to the shipping room with great corporate discounts

I submitted a diff to fix someone else’s code in their codebase because I saw the bug first and they said *thank you*, where every other job I’ve had prior I would have gotten a managerial chat about overstepping my bounds.

Employer contribution limits are much higher - it's 36.5k this year. It's just not common in the tech industry to get that much employer contributions.

MSFT matches 50% of your contributions. You can contribute 18500 for 2018, and Microsoft will also contribute 9250. Beyond that, there’s a separate limit of 55,000/year. This means you can contribute 27,250 (55000-18500-9250) using after tax money. However, Microsoft allows for in-service rollovers, so that 27250 can be rolled over into a Roth IRA. This is the mega backdoor Roth.
