Any tech workers in Canada? Whats your TC?

I’m a Canadian SWE working in SF currently having some visa troubles between jobs and debating whether its worth it to move back to Canada. I’m curious where you work (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal) and what companies. Also, what is your comp and WLB like? Do the U.S. tech companies in Canada treat you the same as the crunchy soft bellied americans in silicon valley? My impression of office work in Canada was poorly lit stuffy depressing offices with no little to no character. Is it still like that? Are you happy where you are?

Offices are on par. Pay is 70% to 50% of the Bay area.

It's the total comp that would be that far apart, not the salary..salary difference should be about 15-20 percent post rate conversion

Google dontbe3vil Oct 19, 2019

Yes, I'm talking about TC - what that OP asked about. It's kinda sad, I hope this difference reduces soon

If your working for a Bay Area company you’re fine.TC usually between 150k CAD to 200k CAD. God forbid I ever end up at a Canadian company-if it comes to that I will have to immigrate elsewhere

Google dontbe3vil Oct 19, 2019

Even at 200k cad, you are making almost 50% of your 300kusd FAANG salary though...

Zynga parott Oct 19, 2019

You aren’t going to get 300k USD anywhere in the world outside the US so I’m fine with that

Darkstore grayworm OP Oct 19, 2019

Interesting, but cost of living is much cheaper in Canada. $200k will go much further in Canada than it would in SF. I guess this is the information I’d like to confirm. Edit: cost of living comparison SF to Vancouver seems SF is about 50% more costly to live

Zynga parott Oct 19, 2019

You won’t get 200k USD -you’ll get maybe 200k CAD so it will even out unless you get a remote job

Darkstore grayworm OP Oct 19, 2019

Yeah that’s what I’m saying, seems to be about even

Google dontbe3vil Oct 19, 2019

Where do you get the 50% number? Housing in Vancouver is close to sv cost and most other things - groceries, gas, cars etc cost as much or more

Facebook bujo Oct 19, 2019

Vancouver is equally as expensive as the Bay Area for housing. But rent is cheaper in Vancouver and Property taxes are a fraction of what it's in Bay Area. If you can have a house paid off in Vancouver, then $200k gig is a decent income to live like a king / queen.

Zynga parott Oct 19, 2019

Or save the $$$ and buy a house in Montreal /Calgary

Facebook bujo Oct 19, 2019

Montreal is nice but I could never do Calgary.

OP you're trying very hard to rationalize moving back. The fact is you'll have considerably less money when you're talking about long term TC and savings, after all expenses. There's no other way to spin it. Taxes are also higher in Canada (in BC the marginal rate is basically 50% once you hit 200k).

Google dontbe3vil Oct 19, 2019

This. So OP, it makes sense to move back if other factors such as closeness to family are in play - does not make sense from a purely financial perspective

what visa problem? i m on TN also m considering hopping soon. do i have to resign first and wait for visa before atarting at a new company?

Darkstore grayworm OP Oct 20, 2019

No, find a new job first and ideally get them to file the petition for another TN and upon receipt you can resign and start at the new company

Morgan Stanley anony101 Oct 22, 2019

How long have you been earning 125K?

I am in Vancouver (moved back from Bay Area earlier this year). TC: $400k ish USD. I am working remotely. My manager / director is not supportive but they will allow me to stay at FB till end of next year (2020). I will need to look for a new job after it. My advice is to join as US based company, negotiate aggressively and then transfer to Vancouver.

Zynga parott Oct 24, 2019

What’s your plan after 2020?Move back?I think realistically the max TC is 200CAD for anything out here.

Facebook fakeit! Oct 24, 2019

I have gotten $250-$280k CAD offer both of which I declined as FB is allowing me to stay till end of 2020. I have a decent nest egg (~$1M USD) that I will use to buy 1 condo (rental) and 1 home and then take a paycut + settle down with gf. I am not moving back to Bay area.
